  5. Impact & affect on victims and their families • Fear • Reluctance to leave home • Homes become fortresses • Isolation • Changes in routines • Family breakdown • Acceptance of victimisation • Loss of friends / friends do not visit • Impact on health and wellbeing

The Pilkington family'taunted and tormented' • Mother set fire to her car in a Leicestershire lay-by, killing herself and her 18 year old disabled daughter, had been taunted by gangs for 10 years • Full time carer for her daughter who had severe learning difficulties • 19 year old son (severely dyslexic) also subjected to abuse Borough Council aware of abuse 1 letter of complaint to MP 33 incidents recorded by Police

  8. Mate Crime • The exploitation, abuse or theft from any vulnerable person by those they consider to be their friends. • Often referred to as 'fake friends'.

Suffolk Hate Crime Service Stop Hate Together 01473 668966 www.suffolkhatecrime.org.uk Suffolk Hate Crime Service Background: • Partnership between Suffolk County Council & Suffolk Constabulary • Receives financial support from District and Borough Councils • Developed in 2009 from and encompassing the racial harassment department • The team currently has 3 Hate Crime Officers covering the whole of Suffolk

Stop Hate Together 01473 668966 www.suffolkhatecrime.org.uk Suffolk Hate Crime Service Referrals: Referrals can come from anyone, including: • Direct referrals from victims, families and carers • Police • Social Services • Anti-Social Behaviour Teams • Housing Officers Referrals can be made over the phone, email, or using our hate crime reporting form.

  13. Consortium of 7 charities • 3 year funding from Ministry of Justice to support to victims of Hate Crime • Providing buddying / 3rd party reporting centres / training / awareness raising

  14. Stay Safe Scheme • Launched as a pilot scheme in Felixstowe in 2010 • Aims to provide places of safety for vulnerable people outside their home • Initially created to support people with Learning Disabilities • Places are asked to support the scheme by displaying a 'Stay Safe' sticker

  15. Stay Safe Scheme cont... • Stay Safe card contains basic information & emergency contacts • If someone is separated from carer, feel scared or vulnerable, they are able to go into a Stay Safe Place and present their card.
