Log your outreach! • Endowed Scholarship • Region Websites & Blogs – Visit often! • The Society of Women Engineers is (SWE) is a non-profit educational service organization whose goal is to encourage women to achieve their full potential in careers as engineers and leaders. • The Sonora Region, also known as Region B, includes Arizona, New Mexico, Southern California, Southern Nevada, and Utah. • The SWE Mission is to stimulate women to achieve full potential in careers as engineers and leaders, expand the image of the engineering profession as a positive force in improving the quality of life, and demonstrate the value of diversity. • For more information on SWE visit www.swe.org.   2. Governor’s Newsletter Fall 2013 Sonora Region GOVERNOR’S CORNER • I hope everyone is settled into the new SWE year. It was great to see so many of you at WE13 in Baltimore! Many more Region B bees were adopted in Baltimore so keep all those fun pictures coming! I’m looking forward to all the upcoming fun in FY14. There’s been a lot of changes this year in SWE so make sure to watch for updates and to contact region leadership if you find you still have questions. Throughout the year if you have any SWE questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me. • P.S. Sharon was an active member of SWE and a big part of the history of SWE-LA and Region B. Her smiling face and bright energy could be found at SWE conferences for decades. Region B winners include: Distinguished New Engineer: Natalie Vanderspiegel, Solar Turbines (San Diego County section) SWE Fellow: Virginia Counts, P.E., Medtronic, Inc (Phoenix section) Emerging Leader: Sonja Domazet, Northrop Grumman Corporation (Los Angeles section) Linh Dang, Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems (Los Angeles section) Outstanding SWE Counselor: Helene Finger, California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo Distinguished Service Award: Anita Eileen Gale, F.SWE, The Boeing Company, (Orange County Section) Resnik Challenger Medal: Christine Geosling, Ph.D., Northrop Grumman Corporation (Los Angeles section) Please join us at WE13 Conference in Baltimore, Maryland, to learn more about this year’s award recipients and celebrate their achievements!

  5. Governor’s Newsletter Fall 2013 Sonora Region Highlights from FY14 Region B Tactical Plan: • Region Mentoring program with 10 mentor/mentee pairs – Need Help! Volunteer to help organize today! • “SWEeter Futures Outreach Program” – combined efforts to reach out to 25,000 K-12 students – launched at WE13 • 95% of sections turn in section reports on time - 91% after report #1 • Increase Region B Membership retention to 75% - 60% region retention at end of Oct. • Improve Region (electronic) communications – new region council DropBox up and running, website still needs help

  6. Governor’s Newsletter Fall 2013 Sonora Region New Faces Program Collegiates: Applications are now open for National Engineers Week Foundation’s New Faces of Engineering–College Edition. This third-annual event honors the best and brightest engineering students in the U.S. and beyond. Applications are available at: http://www.facebook.com/CollegeEdition and the deadline for submissions is Nov. 15. Nominees will be announced Feb. 13 immediately prior to the kick-off of Engineers Week 2014 (Feb. 16-22). Winners, to be announced on April 2, receive scholarships and national recognition in print and online. Access Recordings of SWE Finance Training for FY14 Section, Region and MAL Officers Are you a section, region or MAL officer and interested in learning more about finances at the section and region level? The finance committee recently recorded two webinars: SWE Finance Training for FY14 Section, Region, and MAL OfficersSWE, Your EIN, and the IRS These webinars help prepare collegiate and professional treasurers and presidents/governors with the tools they'll need for a successful year. The first webinar covers the latest version of the finance manual and the second webinar deals with EINs and other tax issues. The run time for each webinar is about 30 minutes.
