  2. What is biometrics? • Biometrics is a security measure used to identify physical features of people to allow access to a system. • This typically refers to things like voice, fingerprint, hand, signature, facial and iris recognition.

What do these do? • Voice recognition – Compares a person’s speech with a stored voice pattern. • Fingerprint recognition – A fingerprint scanner measures in dpi (dots per inch), which detects the small ridges and swirls of a fingerprint. The image is then matched up with a pre-scanned image of the same fingerprint stored on the database. • Hand geometry – The size and layout of the hand are measured and then matched up with a pre-scanned image on the database. This is the most expensive biometric. • Signature verification – A signature is signed on a pressure-sensitive tablet. The pressure and motion of the signature are measured and compared to predetermined recordings of the signature.

  4. Facial recognition – Recognises 80 predetermined points on the human face (e.g distance between the eyes, chin line & depth of eye sockets) recorded and stored on a database. • Iris recognition – Scans & detects up to 247 points on the iris. Very expensive.

  5. How are biometrics used in modern society? Biometrics are used as a security measure to verify users on a network. They are commonly used on things as small as a personal laptop, and as big as high security organisations. Biometrics are also usedas a supplement for swipe cards or keys. Fingerprint scanning has been introduced at Walt Disney World to allow access to frequent visitors. This is better than swipe cards or keys, as it prevents others from using their membership.

  6. What are the security issues associated with biometrics? It has been argued that biometrics are an intrusive form of technology (mainly iris recognition) as it requires scanning of parts of the body. There has also been worries about the risk of identity theft. When registering as a user in a system, the body part is scanned and kept in a database. A hacker could then hack into the system and obtain these scans and use them to his or her advantage.
