  1. Davis Drive Middle School 8th Grade 2013-2014

  2. Language Arts • The 8th grade curriculum focuses on the following units: • Writing • Literature • Vocabulary Skills • Grammar Skills

  3. Writing • We will work on building the skills they learned in the 6th and 7th grade. • It is important for the students to understand the writing process. We encourage you to serve as editors of their writing. • The students have already turned in a Friendly Letter.

  4. 40- Book Challenge • Students will be challenged to read 40 books throughout the school year. • Each quarter students will be required to read two novels of their choice. • The students will be required to complete a writing assignment and/or project with each novel. • The first project (CD Project) is due September 26.

  5. Grammar • We will be teaching grammar throughout the year. • The students will practice each concept in class and be expected to review them at home. • Quizzes will be given each quarter. The first quiz will be on Friday, September 13.

  6. Article of the Week • They will receive the article on Tuesdays and they are due the following Monday. • Students are expected to annotate and reflect on the article using the graphic organizer provided. • Annotation expectations and a grading rubric can be found on Blackboard.

  7. Grading • Homework 5% • Classwork/AoW 15% • Quizzes/Vocabulary 30% • Tests/Projects 50%

  23. Expectations • Come prepared with all materials • Ex. Pencil, paper, homework, calculator, binder • Complete homework (assigned nightly) • Study for assessments • Provide positive contributions to class

  25. Grades per quarter • Homework – Graded per unit (≈ 3) • Classwork – Daily Warm-Ups (spiral review), Problem Sets (end of each unit) (≈ 12) • Quizzes – 1 or 2 per unit (≈ 4 – 6) • Tests – 1 or 2 per unit (depending on length of unit (≈ 3)

Calculator • We would like students to have a TI-83+ or TI-84+ • Students are expected to have a graphing calculator with them in class every day • This calculator is also approved for use on the 8th grade Math EOG, CCM1 EOCs, CCM2 final, MSLs, AP Exams, SAT, and ACT. • We understand that the purchase is an investment; however, many students use their calculators into college.

How is Common Core Math different? • Mathematical Practice Standards • Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them • Reason abstractly and quantitatively • Construct viable arguments and critique the reason of others • Model with mathematics • Use appropriate tools strategically • Look for and make use of structure • Attend to precision • Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning

  29. Common Core Math 8 • Students in Common Core Math 8 are currently being prepared to take CCM1 as 9th graders • 8th Grade Math EOG (Active / Inactive)

Common Core Math I and II (CCMI and CCMII) • Students will receive high school credit upon successful completion of the course • The grade for the class and EOC/MSL grade will be on the high school transcript, but it will not be included in GPA • Must pass the EOC (end of course) exam / MSL • CCMI EOC counts as 25% of a student’s overall grade (WCPSS policy) • CCMII MSL counts as 20% of a student’s overall grade (WCPSS policy) • Must also take the 8th grade math EOG

  31. 20th Day Policy (WCPSS Policy) • Students in a class taking an EOC (CCMI) are bound by the 20th day policy • Any student in the class after the 20th day MUST take the EOC, regardless of class average • Students with a D or F in CCMI will receive a letter next Wednesday or Thursday informing parents of the 20th day policy • The first test is Sept. 19th…tests count as 60% of a students quarter average • The 20th day of school is Sept. 24th.
