  1. MikaylaMeasey The transition from childhood and adulthood occurred as teenagers in their in-between stage emerged their own identities and took advantage of the fact that they were apart of a generation of new beginnings.

Characteristics – 1950s Teenager • Generation of new beginnings • Dominated fashion and style • Greaser and prep looks were utilized • Rock ‘n’ Roll was praised • Elvis Presley became “King of Rock ‘n’ Roll” and idolized • New outlook on life for freedom and independence • College was the new future • Beat Movement showed self-expression

  3. Holden – Childhood • Immature • Overreacts in situations • Extremely judgmental • Calls everyone, adults especially, phonies

  4. Holden – Adulthood • Smokes cigarettes on a daily basis • Buys alcoholic beverages and drinks on most occasions • Interested in sex • Curses all the time • Travels alone

Childhood – Adulthood • Frozen lake representsthe thin line between childhood and adulthood • Holden relates to the ducks • Doesn’t understand where the ducks go; doesn’t understand where he’s meant to go in life • Realizes some things are only temporary and things can change quickly • Lake makes him reminisce on his own childhood

Holden’s POV – Loss of Innocence • Innocence is lost too quickly and should be cherished • Wants Phoebe to stay young and innocent • Children attempt to be mature by writing offensive language on school walls and public areas • Angers him; makes him realize what Phoebe may be exposed to • Cursing, smoking, drinking, and having sex makes him an adult • Needs to find independence and stop relying on others to bail him out • Lost his innocence through his experiences- Allie’s death and getting kicked out of 4 different schools

  7. 1950s Teenager POV – Loss of Innocence • Doing your own thing • Wearing what you want and listening to the music you like • Rebellious actions began to appeal to them more and more as their excitement was banned, including dances and Rock ‘n’ Roll • Lost their youth through new experiences – self-expression, new interest in dating, and sexual experimentation

  8. My POV – Childhood to Adulthood • Being independent to the point where you can support yourself • Thinking through any decisions being made and knowing the pros and cons of each • Having a future
