  3. Texas = BUFFER zone for Spanish [protect valued towns/mines] • 1760 - 1,200 colonists in Texas • 1821 – Revolution w/Spain = Mexico’s Independence • America recognizes [why?] • Lands = valuable  weaknesses in Mex. Govt/Econ (INFERIOR)

  4. * Manifest Destiny and $ • Oregon Country • Settlers drawn by fur trade (& to convert Indians – missions) • Oregon Trail: overland route from Missouri to Oregon harsh journey = many DIED!!!

  5. JUST B/C IT’S INTERESTING • Many died on journey (treacherous conditions – i.e., starvation, disease, Indian attacks) • The Donner Party story – stuck in snowstorm and resorted to cannibalism to survive Mmmmm I taste like Chicken!!

Mexicans received manufactured goods in exchange for horses, mules, furs, & silver In order to come to Mexico, Americans had to (1) agree to become a Mexican citizen, (2) worship as Roman Catholics, and (3) accept constitution (banned slavery) • Mexico – encouraged American immigration in order to farm the land • Santa Fe Trail: trade route from Missouri to Santa Fe, NM • Drawn by cotton land (similar to South)

Missouri Compromise = Fight over LA purchase land (36 30’) • North of Missouri = free • South of Missouri = slave • The remaining LA Territory would remain= free (slavery was to be excluded) • No one EVER thought the “Great American Desert” would ever be settled, so slavery NOT an issue….YET!

Alamo Background • Home to missionaries & their Indian converts for ~ 70 years (1773, Sp officials seize lands  Indians remain - farmers) • Early 1800s = Spanish military station (during Mexico’s war for independence • Dec 1835: Texas Revolution  Texan Tejano’s take over Alamo  Feb 1836, General Santa Anna surprised them

General Santa Anna = dictator of Mexico • Orders Americans be disarmed and deported • 200 Anglo-Texans vs. 4,000 Mexicans (Tejanos) fight at Alamo … Mexicans win • - those that surrender (attempted to escape) = shot/slain! Alamo  12 days of cannon fire, then Mexican troops overrun walls of the Alamo in the predawn hours of March 6th, 1836 FIRE the CANNON!!!

Other Texans = inspired • “Remember the Alamo” = remember the bravery and brutal  heroism • Attack / defeat Santa Anna … Texas = Independent About a month after the Alamo, Santa Anna’s forces defeated – Santa Anna was captured (hiding in a marsh dressed as a private) signs a treaty fearing execution

  15. Causes • Manifest destiny: belief that the US was destined to rule all of N. Am. • Southern desire to add slave states • Mexico refuses to sell CA • Mexico offended when US annexes TX US has advantage over Mexico b/c (1) larger, (2) more $, & (3) more people
