  2. What is this… A carbon footprintis a measure of the impact our activities have on the environment in variable climate changes. It relates to the amount of greenhouse gases produced in our daily lives. Burning fossil fuels for electricity, heating and transportation are considered green house gases. The carbon footprint is a measurement of all greenhouse gases that are produced mostly be carbon dioxide.

  3. A carbon footprint is made up of two parts, the primary footprint (shown by the blue slices of the pie chart) and the secondary footprint (shown as the yellow slices).

  4. Primary Footprint The primary footprintis a measure of our direct uses of CO2. This is caused by the burning of fossil fuels including domestic energy consumption and transportation.

  5. Secondary Footprint The secondary footprintis a measure of the indirect CO2 uses from all the products we use. These are associated with their manufacture and will eventual breakdown. The more we buy the more there is a problem with the environment.

  7. Solar Water Heating Solar Panels are attached to your roof and by the sun rays heating up the panels, the system uses the collected heat to heat the water. This is 100% effective in the summer and 50% throughout the rest of the year. This reduces carob emissions by 400kg per year.

  8. Wind Turbines Wind Turbines ideal site are on top of hills away from tall buildings. A special inverter and controller converts DC electricity to AC. It is controlled by wind and not by batteries. Excess electricity can be exported to the grid and sold to the local electricity supply company.

  9. Switching Light Bulbs LED lights use 20% less energy and can last up to 15 times longer. It saves the energy waste by 3 quarters.

  10. Insulation Insulation is one of the most cost efficient ways of reducing your heating bills and is also easy to install by yourself.

  11. Biodiesel Cars Biodieselis a fuel that can be used in any diesel powered vehicle. It is biodegradable and non-toxic. Biodiesel can be made from waste vegetable oil. This can be collected from chip shops and restaurants and processed to make biodiesel that can be used to run any diesel motor.

  12. Recycling Throwing things away is a waste of the energy and the resources taken to make the product. Everyone should reuse materials again and again without throwing them out unless necessary. Recyclinguses less energy and produces less pollution than making things from scratch.
