Book 3 Chapter 11 Dusk. Kelly Jean Mealey. Title Meaning. Dusk- Towards the end of the chapter, Carton makes plans with Mr. Lorry and Dr. Manette to try and save Darnay. This all occurs in the time of dusk. . The Storyline. In the previous chapter, we learn about Darnay’s sentence.

  2. Title Meaning Dusk- Towards the end of the chapter, Carton makes plans with Mr. Lorry and Dr. Manette to try and save Darnay. This all occurs in the time of dusk.

  3. The Storyline • In the previous chapter, we learn about Darnay’s sentence. • Due to this, Lucie breaks down and weeps for her husband, begging to hold him one last time • The guards holding Darnay allow this, which gives Darnay and Lucie a chance to say goodbye. • Once the guards take Darnay away, Lucie faints. • Carton carries Lucie to the coach, which brings Carton, Lucie, Dr.Manette and Mr.Lorry to Lucie’s house.

The Storyline {pt. 2} • The setting changes to Lucie’s house, where Carton lies down an unconscious Lucie. • Little Lucie then comes up to Carton, begging him to help her parents. • Carton kisses Lucie on the forehead, whispering, “A life you love”(349). • Carton then leaves to go talk to Mr.Lorry and Dr.Manette • Carton convinces Dr.Manette to go beg the judges to change the sentence and both men will meet up again at dusk. • Dr.Manette leaves and Carton and Mr.Lorry discuss how there is no hope.

  5. Literary Devices Repetition- “We know now, what a struggle you made of old. We know now, what you underwent when you suspected my descent, and when you knew it. We know now, the natural antipathy you strove against, and conquered, for her dear sake”(347). Allusion- “The weary are at rest!”(346). Foreshadowing- “Then, issuing from the obscure corner from which he had never moved, Sydney Carton came and took her up”(347).

  6. Essential Quote “If I might touch him! If I might embrace him once! O, good citizens, if you would have so much compassion for us!”-Lucie (346).
