  9. BOOST Goals • Improve our reading skills • Build our strengths to allow for classroom success • Discover new interests • Make new friends • Meet mentors and learn by the examples they set • Have fun and support each other

  10. BOOST is awesome! We will do a lot of fun activities if we can follow the guidelines and utilize our procedures! • Our classroom guidelines/procedures help us maximize the time we have together: • Be respectful and responsible. • Be organized and follow directions. • Be on time. • Be prepared.

  11. Class Procedures #1 Arrival. Students should walk into the room silently, find their folders, greet their mentors, and get right to work!!!!! #2 Dismissal. Students and mentors will receive a 5 minute warning before class is dismissed. This allows you to find a good stopping point and have final discussion regarding your assignment. When dismissal is announced, please silently put your folders away and line up. NO TALKING PLEASE!!! #3 Early Finishers. If you and your mentor finish an assignment early: - you may read together from a book of your choice - you may read and answer questions on biography/science/reading comprehension cards - you may finish an assignment that you did not complete in the past

  12. Classroom Consequences and Rewards BOOST TICKETS • If you do not follow classroom procedures or guidelines, you will receive a BOOST ticket. You must follow up with the BOOST teacher after class to discuss the ticket. This ticket is also to be shared with your classroom teacher. • Multiple tickets will result in a call to your parents. BOOST BRAGS • If you consistently show great effort and behavior in the BOOST room, you will receive a BOOST BRAG! This is to be shared with your classroom teacher and taken home to your parents! A copy will be posted in the BOOST room!

  13. Reading Tips • Look for clues before you begin reading a passage. Try to guess what you might be reading about. • Stop several times during a reading passage to retell and think about the reading in your own words. • When answering questions about a passage, go back to the passage to find the answers! Don’t use your memory…..use your text!! • Use highlighters every time!!! Highlight key words in questions and answers in reading passages! • What is the author’s purpose? If you know why a passage was written, you are better able to understand the details of what you are reading. • RE-READ for understanding!! If you don’t get it the first time, read it again!

  14. Reading Options • You can read aloud to your mentor. • Your mentor can read aloud to you. • You can read aloud to your mentor after you’ve had a chance to hear them read. • You and your mentor can read aloud together! This is really fun when reading poetry, or short stories! • You can read a paragraph, then your mentor can read a paragraph. • Teacher Read! Talk in your teacher voice, stand up straight and pretend that you have an entire class as an audience. • Read silently to yourself once for practice, then read aloud to your mentor.

  15. Let’s Read on Grade Level before the end of the year!!!

  16. Ms. White, Ms. Talley, your mentors, and your teachers EXPECT you to succeed! We know that you can.

  17. “ Hold fast to dreams for if dreams die Life is a broken-winged bird that cannot fly. Hold fast to dreams for when dreams go Life is a barren field frozen with snow.” - Langston Hughes
