  3. Collaborative Services • Part of Merit’s Mission • A lot of “old fashioned” leg work • Not much technology, yet • Especially in Higher-Ed • Collaborative technology is seen as a core competency • Collaborative technology need is large enough that they can’t see an economy of scale benefit

E-Mail and Document Management • E-Mail based on Zimbra platform • Think Exchange with a web-based Outlook Client • Working with Xythos to provide a powerful Document Management system integrated into the mail client • Working to integrate with our Voice provider • Zimbra integrates with Blackboard

Merit Video Collaborative Services • Patterned after MCNC’s service • Description • Pre-class set up and check • During class proactive monitoring • We provide the MCU • No HD yet, but will provide in advance of demand • We do not provide the end-points • Additional Fee service • Helps make our NOC cost-effective

  6. “On-Net” Pricing • Encourage collaboration • Data • Purchase 10 MB = 5 MB on and 5 MB off • Most 5 : 1 Off to On • Some 1 : 1! • Voice • Calls from one MeritVoice member to another are free

Professional Learning • Meetings • Merit Member Conference – Multi-day • MJTS, MOST • Workshops - Single Day • Merit puts the program together • One-time topics • Usually related to what we are doing • Training • Rarely provided by Merit • Professional training through partners • For lower price • Not available in Michigan • Internships • NANOG – Engineers, Event Planning, Web Design • Other roles within Merit • Communities of Practice • Pilot: Michigan Information Technology Executives (MITE) • Multiple in-person meetings • Web-based collaboration suite (iCohere)

Geographic Communities • Take many different organizational forms • Informal • Formal – Co-operatives, Consortiums, etc • Geographically close, usually rural • Share Fiber and other Resources • Need better access to broadband • Vast majority are in our potential community • Higher-Ed, L-12, Libraries, Health Care, Government, Non-profit • Do partner with ISPs (or at least offer) • Many are not Members • Any some don’t become members • This is hard work • Takes lots of patience: 1 to 3 Years • Leverages our trusted position
