  2. The Act of Union - 1840 • The government in England listened to Lord Durham • They realized that they need to assimilate the French people in Lower Canada • Assimilate = no more rebellions

  3. The Act of Union - 1840 • So Lower Canada and Upper Canada were combined together to make CANADA • There was an invisible line in the middle • On the right there was Canada East • On the leftthere was Canada West

  4. The Act of Union - 1840 • Canada West is the old Upper Canada. • The people who live there are mostly English and Protestant

  5. The Act of Union - 1840 • Canada East is the old Lower Canada • This is the area where most of the French Canadians live Close to the St. Lawrence River • The people who live there are mostly French and Catholic • There are English people in Montreal, Quebec City and the Eastern Townships

  7. The Act of Union-1840 • The government in England COMBINED the ASSEMBLIES of Upper and Lower Canada • They thought that all the votes would be in favor of what English people would want • That would force French people to assimilate
