  1. Why bike? The Four tenants of Bike for you, Bike for us Our community Our environment Our generation Our health

  2. Our Community

  3. Our Community • As a national leader in sustainability initiatives, Emory University should already be on the frontline for encouraging alternative forms of transportation • By incentivizing biking on campus, we will create a happier, healthier and more unified community and alleviate traffic to and from the parking lots

  4. Our Environment

  5. Our Environment • A NASA analysis found that motor vehicles are the greatest contributor to atmospheric warming because they release pollutants and greenhouse gases that promote warming, while emitting few aerosols that counteract it.
NASA, 2010 - Road Transportation Emerges as Key Driver of Warming • On Emory’s scope, incentivizing biking will encourage education on their importance and how one can make daily sustainable decisions

  6. Our Health

  7. Our Health • Cycling is one of the easiest ways to exercise • Cycling builds strength and muscle tone • Cycling builds stamina • Cycling improves cardio-vascular fitness • Cycling improves heart health

  8. Our Generation

  9. Our Generation • Biking promotes the butterfly effect • “Good” decision making can be the drop in the bucket that catalyzes Emory’s stewardship as an environmental leader

  10. This is where we need YOU OSI has a lofty goal to get one out of four single occupancy vehicles coming to campus off the road by 2015. 2015 is next year. In order to reach, or at least make progress towards this goal, Emory should reward the students who wish to act as leaders towards a more sustainable commute and a healthier lifestyle.

  11. Emory should offer students who pledge to ride a bike for at least a certain number of days—such as a 3 week commitment in a 15 week semester—should be guaranteed a deduction in their parking pass rate. This commitment should be interchangeable each semester after the student evaluates the past semester and if they feel they can commit to greater or fewer “bike commute” days.

  12. As a student-run program, we need your help to get us started in helping the college community become healthier and more sustainable. • Total cost - including a 5-bike grid bike rack, a simple, table-based app, and miscellaneous employee costs – is $5820.

  13. Remember…
