  1. Equip Inclusion Project

  2. The background We have been working on further developing inclusion at Morriston Primary School. The Inclusion project arose after four teaching staff from Morriston attended the Sensory Stories course, which was part of the Equip Project based at Ysgol Crug Glas. We set up a Sensory Stories area in the library in school and decided to focus on the story of “Peter and the Wolf” in sessions where Year 5, and the Specialist Teaching Facilities would work together.

  3. What we did: • We started with the story of "Peter and the Wolf“. • With the assistance of the support staff in school, a story sack was made along with various poetry bags. • A role-play area was set up in the Year 5 classroom. The library, environmental classroom and sensory room were all used as part of a multi-sensory approach and to develop experiential learning using the outdoor environment.

  4. We took a character from the book each week and worked on a variety of activities: The multi-sensory room was used for story reading and the soundbeam. We made bird feeders in the environmental classroom and clay ducks. We made models out of Knex and stickle bricks.

  5. The Year 5 pupils worked on thinking skills games and made various activities for the Stf children to use such as jigsaws and games. In the library Year 5 pupils used reference books and worked on a variety of different forms of poetry whilst the STF pupils played matching games and completed worksheets according to their level. The children also worked on creative sessions focussing on developing their creativity and fine motor skills, such as art work, collage, cutting and sticking etc.

  6. We continued to look at other characters in the story using a range of activities and Year 5 also looked at Sergei Prokofiev's musical story of "Peter and the Wolf". They learned about families of instruments in the orchestra. In order to share our work with the other classes and parents, we held a special assembly in school. The children performed their our version of the story of Peter and the Wolf, using a range of equipment including the soundbeam, switches and Big Macs.

  7. The project was highly successful and was enjoyed by all involved. The children made lovely progress. All children were fully included in activities and we saw some lovely friendships and family groups develop. • The project was so successful that we went on to develop it further with other classes throughout the school and we have continued to develop the work using a range of different themes and this will continue to be an ongoing feature of what we do in our work to further develop inclusion at Morriston Primary School.
