  1. Multiplication Take 1 By Miss O.

  2. Meanings for Multiplication • Solve to review: 3 + 3 = 4 + 4 + 4 = 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = What do you notice about solving these? Talk and turn to your partner about what you notice. Then share your findings with the group.

  3. How can multiplication be used when equal groups are combined? • Multiplication can be used to find the total when you know the number of equal groups and the number in each group. For example: Here we have 3 groups. In each group, we have 2 stars. We could say 3 groups x 2 stars (in each group) = 6 total stars.

  4. Let’s Think Through Some Examples! • Joy is baking muffins. She has 4 rows with 3 muffins in each row. How many muffins does she have in all? Draw this in your notes! 1 2 3 Row 1 Row 2 Row 3 Row 4

  5. Array • The muffin pan is like an array. • Objects arranged in equal rows form an array. • You can multiply to find the total number because the rows are equal. • 4 x 3 = 12

  6. Changing Arrays Here’s a different muffin pan as an array. What if Joy used this pan? How many rows? ______ How many in each row? ____ We could say 6 x 4 = ______

  7. 6 x 4 = 24 product factor factor Product is the answer to a multiplication problem!!

  8. Last Example Together! • Joy put the muffins on 3 plates with 8 muffins on each plate. How many muffins does she have in all? • How many plates (groups)? _______ • How many on a plate? ________ • _____ x _____ = _____ *Fill in the blanks with a partner. Then talk about it with your group.

  9. Here’s What I Want You To Do: • Write an addition sentence and a multiplication sentence for each picture. Questions? Ask Sreepal! Example 5 + 5 = 10 5 x 2 = 10

  10. On Your Own (in your math notebook) 1. 2. 3. 4.

  11. 4 Ways to show you are multiplying: • 5 x 3 = 15 • 5 3 = 15 • 5(3) = 15 • (5)3 = 15

  12. Check Out the Array! • Miss O. brought in her muffin pan. • Pass it around and talk about how it is an array. • What’s the multiplication problem we can form out of it? _____ x _____ = _____  Write it in your math notebook.

  13. What does this array tell you? 7 rows 7 x 4 = ______ 4 in each row

  14. Multiple • The product (answer of a multiplication problem) of any two whole numbers. 4 x 4 = 16 16 is a MUTLIPLE of 4

  15. What are the multiples of 2? 2 x 8 = _____ 2 x 9 = _____ 2 x 10 = _____ 2 x 11 = _____ 2 x 12 = _____ 2 x 1 = _____ 2 x 2 = _____ 2 x 3 = _____ 2 x 4 = _____ 2 x 5 = _____ 2 x 6 = _____ 2 x 7 = _____ Hint: Have these memorized by Monday!

  16. What are the multiples of 3? 3 x 8 = _____ 3 x 9 = _____ 3 x 10 = _____ 3 x 11 = _____ 3 x 12 = _____ 3 x 1 = _____ 3 x 2 = _____ 3 x 3 = _____ 3 x 4 = _____ 3 x 5 = _____ 3 x 6 = _____ 3 x 7 = _____ Hint: Have these memorized by Monday!

  17. What are the multiples of 4? 4 x 8 = _____ 4 x 9 = _____ 4 x 10 = _____ 4 x 11 = _____ 4 x 12 = _____ 4 x 1 = _____ 4 x 2 = _____ 4 x 3 = _____ 4 x 4 = _____ 4 x 5 = _____ 4 x 6 = _____ 4 x 7 = _____ Hint: Have these memorized by Monday!
