  2. Images can be used for a variety of reasons • Identify • Report • Entertain • Inform • Amuse

  3. Pictures should not be used to fill space • They should add to the verbal reporting • Pictures appeal to readers in different ways

  4. Photographs • Must have several good qualities • Always in focus so the content can be clear • Should have a range of good exposure • When using two pictures on a page you must have the color tone consistent!

  5. Content and Composition • Photo’s must have strong content • Center of Interest • Should be immediately visible • Rule of thirds • “golden mean points” • Dictate that meaningful content be place in areas of the frame other than the center

  6. Continued • Also Important to remember are; • Leading Lines • Framing • Grounds • Lighting • Impact

  7. Other things of note • Telling stories through photo’s • Picture packages or groups • Picture stories • Styles • Traditional • Digital

  8. Captions and Cutlines • Every pictures needs a caption • Provide detail about the picture • Complete names should always be used • People are named left to right in captions • Must be in present tense

  9. Things to note about photo’s • Cropping Photo’s • Photo Editing • Abuse of Images (things that weaken the power of photo’s) • Tilting photo’s • Creating photo patterns • Creating collages • Also don’t Photoshop pictures as it is unethical

  10. Art and illustrations are great to use and information graphics are two ways that help catch the readers attention. • Remember to make note of these things when you use pictures with your articles and future projects.
