The New Center of Lodz Nowe Centrum Łodzi “The New Centre of Lodz” project is a part of the municipal project of the development program for the post industrial areas, the so-called local revitalization programme. It consists in building the New City Centre in the vicinity of the Lodz Fabryczna Railway Station and the historic EC1 heat and power plant. The aim of this project is to turn Łódź into an attractive metropolis by means of interesting architecture, appealing cultural events, a wide array of services and a good transportation system.

The New Center of Lodz Nowe Centrum Łodzi In February, 2007, the authorities of Lodz decided to entrust the creation of the concept of the city centre redevelopment to ROB KRIER, the famous Luxembourgian architect and urban planner. Encouraged by (World Art Foundation), founded by Andrzej Walczak, one of the owners of Grupa Atlas, David Lynch, a film director, and Marek Żydowicz, the director of the Camerimage festival, Rob Krier undertook to transform the derelict areas in the vicinity of the Łódź Fabryczna station and the EC1 heat and power plant into a place teeming with life – the new cultural city centre. Krier has designed an urban development concept for the 30-hectare area in the city centre within the premises limited by Kilińskiego, Targowa, Narutowicza and Tuwima streets.

  8. Special Art Zone The contest for the Special Art Zone architectural design has been won by the German “Moller Architekten” studio. The aim of the contest was to gain an architectural concept of the Modern Art Centre building which would be artistically, functionally and practically best-suited for its purpose of the city's “icon”.

  14. EC 1 East • In 2009, the revitalization of the EC1 East buildings is going to start. On thesepremises, the following facilities are to be located: a film studio (among others, David Lynch’s studio), a sound studio and other projects closely related to the film industry. Moreover, within the framework of the ‘5 in Lodz’ project, a library is to be located in the historic machine hall. The designers idea is that the library will complement the museum of modern art and it is going to consist of sets of 5 books which have shaped the outlook on life of world most famous celebrities who will personally select them.

  17. EC 1 West In the EC1 West building, the CENTRE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY is to be located. It will serve as a MUSEUM, EDUCATION AND LEISURE CENTRE. As a museum, it will focus on documenting and commemorating the technical development, both in terms of architecture and electric power, in relation to the aesthetics of time and place, and functionality of a power plant. There will be three EDUCATIONAL PATHS in the Centre of Science and Technology, all connected with power and energy: PATH OF ENERGY PATH OF CIVILISATION AND SCIENCE HISTORY ‘MICRO WORLD – MACRO WORLD’ PATH The most important aspect of the Centre of Science and Technology will be presented as a permanent exhibition along the educational paths – interactive devices will make it possible for the visitors to perform their own experiments, observe and explore physical phenomena, chemical reactions or biological structures. Humanities, such as archaeology, paleontology or social sciences, will also find their place in the Centre. Aims in three main areas will be addressed: popularization of science and education, as well as development and promotion of Łódź and the region.

Eastern part of the project „ New Center of Lodz” • The eastern part of the project includes 60 hectares of the area in the city centre. • Possibility to develop the area for the purposes of services (including metropolitan services), housing, transport and traffic, with the use of the location-related aspects of the multimodal Lodz Fabryczna station • Creating high-quality public space, adequate for the role of this area in the city • Further development of the eastern green area (3-go Maja park) in the western direction (to the Centre) in order to include the St. Moniuszki park in the green area • Possibility to develop prominent architectural sites, including unique high-rise buildings • Creating a housing area in the city centre that would coexist with the service area also in the public space • Providing proper access (in terms of transport) from the east to the area of the Centre with the multimodal Lodz Fabryczna station

Modernisation of railway track from Lodz to Warsaw • The aims of the modernisation works in the area: • construction of the railway track system in the underground section (rail head level – minus 16.5 m) which will make it possible to utilise the overground section for the commercial purposes of PKP and PLK, and integrate this area into the New Centre of Lodz, • facilitating future construction of the tunnel connecting Lodz Fabryczna and Lodz Kaliska railway stations and the possibility of introducing the planned high-speed railway (V = 300km/h) to the city centre, • passenger train journey time between Lodz Fabryczna and Lodz Widzew train stations – 4.5 minutes, • timetable speed V = 140 km/h in the entire section,
