  3. Japan Modernizes Unlike China, Japan will modernize and flex their muscles! The Demand for Foreign Trade • Treaty of Kanagawa(1854)—Japan opens two ports to American ships, thanks to Matthew Perry and his letter (threat) • By 1860, Japan has trade agreements with many nations

  9. Japanese Occupation of Korea Teddy Roosevelt helps Japan and Russia sign a peace treaty. After defeating Russia, Japan attacks Korea with a vengeance.
