2. Context • Digital research data has become increasingly important in most research areas. • Good management, curation and preservation is important for the integrity of science. • Research data has value for verification, reuse and repurposing; reuse of research data can be particularly important in interdisciplinary studies. • Research funders are increasingly asking researchers to make the underlying research available. • Scholarly journals are beginning to require that underlying datasets should be made publicly available.

3. 4. Institutional Statements • The University of Somewhere believes that the effective management of its research data is a critical success factor. It judges itself significantly exposed to the risk that vital research data might be irretrievably lost or corrupted, and that long term reputational damage could occur as a result. Equally, it recognises the huge opportunity that would result from more effective sharing and dissemination of data across its multiple disciplines and between institutions. • The University of Somewhere-Else [has] for some time recognised the growing problem of a serious lack of provision for proper management and curation of research data across many discipline areas. As a leading research institution, we approach the resolution of this challenge as both an opportunity and an obligation.

5. JISC Managing Research Data Programme (JISCMRD) • JISC Research Data Programme seeks to expand effective data management and data sharing to benefit research and the HE sector more generally. • Working towards developing a national strategy with key stakeholders (RCs, FCs, Institutions etc). • Establish the foundations for an effective UK research data infrastructure.

9. Role of the DCC • Digital Curation Centre has an important role to play in the JISC Research Data Programme. • General support, advice for the JISCMRD Programme and projects. • Important task of building capacity and skills in the sector. • Sector capacity to be raised by the dissemination of relevant resources, awareness-raising measures, and the provision of training. • Helpdesk: info@dcc.ac.uk

10. 04/10 JISCMRD Programme Call: Objectives Building capacity and skills… • To encourage research data management training to be embedded in post-graduate academic curricula. • To create a body of discipline-focussed post-graduate training units which can be reused by other institutions and will stimulate curriculum change and a greater awareness of the need for research data management skills training. • To encourage collaboration within HEIs and between Universities and centres of expertise in research data management.

11. PG RDM Training Units • Funding is available for projects to design and pilot discipline-focussed training units for postgraduate courses. • While such units must necessarily consider generic issues in research data curation, it is essential that projects collaborate closely with specific, named academic departments within their institution in order to develop effective and useful discipline-focussed training materials.

12. PG RDM Training Units • There is a need to move from the generic to the specific, to the discipline-focussed. • There is a need to encourage collaboration between research oriented departments and other bodies in Universities which may have expertise in data and information management. • It is essential that the content be scoped and tailored to the discipline-focussed needs of an academic research department. • It is a condition of this Call, therefore, that bids include both a named scholar and the academic department in which requirements will be scoped and training units trialled.

13. PG RDM Training Units • Example elements in approaches para 19. • using appropriate partnerships and expertise to design post-graduate training modules which marry generic research data management / curation approaches while sufficiently taking into account discipline-focussed requirements; • trialling the module/unit in, for example, open/optional courses, a research data management / curation ‘summer school’, PG workshop run collaboratively between institutions; • implementing a research data management / curation training component in discipline-focussed postgraduate courses, in doctoral training programmes, or in professional development programmes.

14. PG RDM Training Units • Bidders are encouraged to form partnerships with existing centres of expertise in research data management (e.g. DCC, UKDA, ULCC, DPC, NERC and other data centres etc).

15. PG RDM Training Units: Impact • Bidders must demonstrate the impact that their proposed work will have. • Evidence for this should be provided by means of partnerships within and outside institutions; activities / events to trial and pilot the materials etc.

16. PG RDM Training Units: Deliverables • Training units/materials to promote discipline-focussed research data management skills in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). • Materials to be made available to the DCC, under a Creative Commons ‘Attribution - Non-Commercial - Share Alike’ License (or equivalent) for wide dissemination to UK HE.

17. JISCMRD Programme Expectations • Participation in strand/programme activities: • Strands Workshop, October 2010. • JISCMRD Conference, March 2011. • Final Programme Workshop, July 2011. • Programme Manager visit and meeting(s) with DCC Support. • Six-monthly reports as indicated in the JISC project management guidelines.

18. JISCMRD Programme Expectations • Project website and blog. 20. Eligibility • Funding from HEFCE Core Funds. • Open Higher Education (HE) Institutions funded by HEFCE or HEFCW. • HE and FE institutions in Northern Ireland and Scotland and FE institutions in England and Wales are not eligible to bid. • Such institutions may be involved as partners in proposals led by HE institutions funded by HEFCE or HEFCW.
