  2. About Us • The Union of Meric Municipalitieswas established by 19 municipalities of the Thrace region in 2003.

Mission - Vision • Mission The mission of the Union of Meric Municipalities is to provide facilities for municipalities’ needs on the issues of international relations,legislation training and solution of common local problems. • Vision The vision of the Union of Meric Municipalities to be the most effective information center of the region, which provide all needs of municipalities on the issues of international relations, legislation training and solution of common local problems.

  4. Field of Activity – 1 Works about Legislation • The Union of Meric Municipalities primarily handles for its member municipalities learning the existing and changing implementations in the legislation and implementing them easily. In this context, the Union carries out activities related to these topics.

  5. Regular Activities • Information Bulletin(Monthly) • The Union of Meric Municipalities, by following the changes in legislation which municipalities are interested in, prepares monthly bulletins and transmits them to its members electronically. • Within the named Information Bulletin, the news about the "Grants Funds" are announced which member municipalities can benefit. • Question- Answer Service • The Union of Meric Municipalities gathers the questions related to the legislation and the implementations that member municipalities wonder and transmits the answers of the questions to the member municipalities through consultation with concerned experts. • Training Seminars: • The Union of Meric Municipalities organizes training programs in order to develop the capacity of all local governments in Turkey.

Selected Past Activities • Information Meeting onEU and EU FinancialAid; October 30, 2009 • As the Union of Meric Municipalities, we organized "Information Meeting" after 2009 Local Elections in order to inform the new Mayor and Council Members on the topics of EU and EU Financial Aid. • In the meeting, the following topics are discussed; - The emergence of European Union - Turkey- EU relations - Turkey’s Financial Resources within the context of EU - Financial Programs that Municipalities can apply. • The Mayors of all municipalities in Edirne and the Council Members of the Union were invited to the Meeting.

  7. Field of Activity - 2 International Relations • The Union primarily handlesfor member municipalities developing their relations outside the country and mutual knowledge and experience sharing on the best practices. In this context, the Union develops projects related to these topics.

  8. Selected Past Activities • The Visit Program to the Union of Evros, Greece • In January 15-16-17, 2004; we as the Union of Meric Municipalities, visited the Union of Evros in Greece in addition to the Municipality of Tichero. • Within this context, we made a meeting on the ways to benefit from EU funds based on mutual information sharing with the Mayor of Tichero, the Officials of the Union of Evros and Council Members.

Field of Activity - 3 Regional Development • The Union of Meric Municipalities primarily handles to bring common problems that affect the quality of municipal services in the region to the agenda and to provide solutions to these problems with support at the national level. • Within this context, primary problems will be defined by the Assembly of Union and events and projects that are implementation-oriented and solution-oriented will be developed by the staff of Union. • Common regional problem defined for 2011 is “Ergene Basin and Environment Pollution.”

Selected Past Activities • The Union of Meric Municipalities, In-Service Training Seminar, December 11-13, 2009 • As the Union of Meric Municipalities, we organized a seminar about Legislation on Personnel and Financial Management in order to inform the Mayors, Assembly members, the Unit Officers and Municipal Personnel. • The aim of the seminar was to contribute the execution of local services to be more effective and efficient. • The seminar was held in January 11-13, 2009 in Edirne with the participation of the Municipalities of Thrace.
