  13. Anti-Vaping Initiative Did you know? New York State raised the age for using or buying vapes, e-cigarettes and tobacco to 21. Regardless of age, these products are illegal to have on school grounds. Did you know? Most vapes contain nicotine. Some vapes contain THC or opioids, with or without the consumer’s knowledge. Did you know? Vapes and e-cigarettes contain addictive ingredients. Did you know? Your IHS Administration can (and will) test your vape. Parents can also test vapes for THC content by purchasing a testing kit at www.parentsandpot.com In the 2019-2020 school year, we will be taking a multi-pronged approach to curbing substance use at our high school through education, partnerships with families and outside agencies, and prevention.

  14. What types of vapes are teens using? While vapes used to be all of a uniform shape in the past, vapes now take a variety of forms. The most common type of vape that we see is a Juul. Though, (when purchased from a store) they contain nicotine, Juul “pods” have also been injected with THC content . Any type of vape, when purchased “on the street” or from an unauthorized dealer, can be injected with THC, K2 Synthetic Marijuana or Opiates.

  15. How can parents help? • Monitor your child’s behaviors, disposition, and activities closely. • Some teens use vapes or other substances to cope with emotional or mental health needs. • If you notice any significant changes in your child’s behavior or disposition, talk to your child openly about what’s going on. • Contact your child’s school counselor for added supports that the school can offer. • Talk with your child about the dangers of vaping and general substance use. • Many teens don’t see vaping as problematic, addictive, or dangerous • Vaping can not only be addictive, it can also be life-threatening if injected (with or without consumer knowledge) with other substances. • Need help? • Reach out to Lindsay Snyder, WICSD Substance Abuse Prevention Specialist at 585 336 2927 or email at Lindsay_Snyder@westiron.monroe.edu for support

  16. Restorative PracticesRestorative practices in schools is a philosophy, set of principles and practices that help adults and young people in schools to both understand and respond to conflict. Restorative practices have successfully strengthened communities in schools, taught adults and students to take responsibility, changed classroom dynamics and improved school safety.
