Statistics ‘EU Kids Online’ survey(9 – 16 year olds) • Nearly all children go online at home (93%), much more so than at school (66%) or at a friend’s home (64%). • In general, internet safety advice is received first from parents (72%), then teachers (68%), then peers (28%). • 59% of young people in Ireland have an online profile on a social networking site (EU average is 59%)

Creating a safe space at home… • Consider a time when wi-fi or modem is switched off • Switching off the phone at night – ‘not the emergency services’ • Using an alarm clock instead of phone • No internet or phone access during homework time • Use appropriate filtering software • Consider online gaming access

  4. SOCIAL MEDIA • Text • Facebook • Twitter • SnapChat • Ask.fm • Instagram/Tumblr/Flickr • Blackberry Messenger • Skype/Chat Roulette • MySpace • LinkedIn

  5. Block – Don’t Reply • Unfriend • Report • Save evidence • Talk/Tell

  6. 4 Ps • Privacy – profile should always be private • Phone number – NEVER publish • Passwords – NEVER share with friends • Photos – think before uploading – once online it’s very difficult to erase

  7. “Cyber Bullying” Cyber bullying can be defined as: • Using information technology to carry out deliberate, repeated, and hostile behaviourby an individual or group, that is intended to harm another or others.

  8. Signs and symptoms • Withdrawn/sad/upset • Anxious – reluctant to attend school • Secretive about using PC/laptop/phone • Angry outbursts after being online The above may be indicators that the child is a victim of cyber bullying.

  9. What should I do.. • Stay calm • Don’t ‘punish’ by taking phone or laptop • Keep the lines of communication open • Try and persuade your child to confide in a trusted adult if they won’t show or tell you DON’T REPLY • Block • Unfriend/unfollow • Report – to service provider • Save evidence – screen shots, copy & paste • Tell/talk to trusted adult/let school know
