  2. Matter & Motion All matter in the universe is constantly in motion, from the revolution of Earth around the sun to electrons moving around the nucleus of the atom. Some examples of matter in motion are: Leaves rustling in the wind Lava flowing from a volcano Bees moving from flower to flower to gather pollen Blood circulating through your body

  3. Changing Position You have to recognize that the object is in motion, to describe an object in motion. If something is changing position, it is in motion. Changing position is when an object moves from one location to another Some examples of changing position are: A fast moving airplanes A leaf swirling in the wind Water trickling from a hose RELATIVE MOTION Determining whether something changes position requires a point of reference. An object changes position if it moves relative to a reference point.

  4. Distance, Displacement,& Speed Distance is how far an object has moved, and displacement is the direction and difference in position between the starting and ending points. Speed is the distance traveled divided by the time taken to travel the distance. The faster something is moving, the less time it takes to travel a certain distance.

  5. Average Speed& Graphing Motion Average speed is found by dividing the total distance traveled by the time taken to travel the distance. An object in motion can change speeds many times as it speeds up or slows down. Instantaneous speed is the speed of an object at one instant of time. you can use a distance-time graph to represent the motion of an object. The distance time graph can be used to compare the speeds of objects.

  6. Velocity • The velocity of an object is the speed of the object and the direction of its motion. • This is why people like hikers use a compass and a map. • It helps determine what their velocity must be. • The velocity of an object can change if the object’s speed changes, its direction of motion changes, or both.
