  2. Background Information * Was born on Dec 11, 1863 * Born in Dover, Delaware in the USA * Attended Wellesley College and Radcliffe College

  3. Work and Accomplishments * Annie worked in the Harvard Observatory. * Collaborated with Henrietta Swan Leavitt - Together they discovered and combined 350,000 stars in 7 groups. - They also discovered that the stars in the same groups were also the same colors.

  4. Stellar Classification * Annie’s system used color and temperature to organize stars into seven classes. * We remember the classes by using the mnemonic device: Oh Be A Fine Girl Kiss Me!

  5. Personal Life and Family * Cannon caught scarlet fever and became completely deaf. * This made it hard for her to socialize, so she focused on her work and never got married or started a family. * Had two younger sisters * Annie’s parents were Wilson Cannon and Mary Jump * It was Annie’s mother that told her to follow her dream of becoming an astronomer

  6. Museum/Places * At the Museum of Delaware, there is an exhibit that revolves around Annie Jump Cannon. * Families and students can explore and learn about Annie through many displays * There are also stars and constellations painted on the ceiling of the museum so that people can identify and learn about the night sky

  7. Quotes “No greater problem is presented to the human mind” “Classifying the stars has helped materially in all studies of the structure of the universe” -Annie Jump Cannon

  8. Present day/Wanted * If Annie were alive today, she would think that astronomy has become much more advanced, and she would be proud that her stellar classification system was still in use today. * Annie Cannon is wanted for creating a star classification system that groups stars by their temperatures and colors.

  9. Now lets play a game!
