This has been a subject of debate among policymakers and the general public -- main users of public transportation. Proponents of free public transportation, above all, argue that it will significantly reduce the number of cars on the road. This can save money needed for private cars and also time for many people since it reduces traffic congestion. This can benefit the environment since less cars can bring less air pollution, and this helps prevent and fight against global warming. They also point out that with more passengers using public transport, the service and quality will improve as well. Additionally, this can create more jobs since more personnel including drivers will be needed to operate the enhanced subway and bus systems. On the other hand, opponents argue that establishing and running free transportation system costs too much money for the government. This will become a burden on many taxpayers after all. Also, even though public transportation becomes free, many people would still use their cars for their own reasons. With more buses on the road, this may worsen traffic congestion may get worse. Free public transportation may also downgrade the quality of service for customers since buses and subways will become more crowded and unreliable with rising safety concerns. Free public transportation may also mean car sales can drop significantly. This can be a blow to the automobile industry and many people involved in it may lose their jobs. Currently, it costs about 1,000 won (approximately US$1) for a subway or a bus ride in Korea.
