    21. 21 Qualifications for Licensure: LBSW LBSW: a baccalaureate degree from a CSWE accredited social work program and a passing score on the basic exam administered by the ASWB

    22. 22 Qualifications for Licensure: LMSW LMSW: a doctoral or master’s degree in social work from a CSWE accredited social work program and a passing score on the intermediate exam administered by the ASWB

    23. 23 Qualifications for Licensure: LCSW Must be licensed as an LMSW and obtain 3000 hours of board approved supervised professional employment experience over a minimum two-year period, but within a maximum four-year period or its equivalent if the experience was completed in another state. Must have a passing score on the clinical exam administered nationally by the ASWB. Must have completed a minimum of 100 hours of face-to-face supervision over the course of the 3000 hours of experience, with a board approved supervisor. Supervised experience must have occurred within the five previous calendar years occurring from the date of application.

    25. 25 Social Work Associates Current SWAs will be merged into LBSW category September 1, 2004 Individuals who have not earned their SWA by Sept. 1, 2004 will be ineligible for social work licensure. From that time forward, all individuals sitting for the social work licensing exam, must have a social work degree from an accredited school.

    27. 27 Requirements for Independent Practice: LBSW BSW: After licensure as an LBSW, an individual shall obtain 3000 hours of Board approved full-time supervised experience over a minimum 2-year period, but within a 4-year period. Supervised experience must have occurred within the 5 previous calendar years. Part-time work will be prorated.

    29. 29 Approved Supervisors Individuals wishing to be approved supervisors must: be an LBSW, LMSW, LMSW-AP, LCSW submit an application to the board take responsibility for services provided by supervisee have completed a 40 hour board-approved supervisory training course currently be engaged in the practice of social work and self-identified as a social worker Currently approved supervisors do not need to take the course.

    31. 31 Counseling Definition: A method used by social workers to assist individuals, couples, families, or groups in learning how to solve problems and make decisions about personal, health, social, educational, vocational, financial, and other interpersonal concerns.

    32. 32 Supportive Counseling Definition The methods used by social workers to help individuals create and maintain adaptive patterns. Such methods may include building community resources, educating clients and informing the public, helping clients identify and build strengths, leading community groups, and providing reassurance and support.

    33. 33 Direct Practice Definition The provision of services, research, system linkage, system development, maintenance and enhancement of social and psychosocial function of clients.

    34. 34 Private Practice An activity characterized by the provision of clinical social work services as an autonomous practitioner solely responsible for the welfare of the client and the services rendered.

    35. 35 Scope of Practice Baccalaureate (LBSW) The application of social work theory, knowledge, methods, ethics, and the professional use of self to restore or enhance social, psychosocial, or biopsychosocial functioning of individuals, groups, families, groups, organizations and communities. Generalist practice that includes interviewing, assessment, planning, counseling, supportive counseling, direct practice, intervention, evaluation, case management, information and referral, problem solving, supervision, consultation, education, advocacy, community organization, and the development, implementation, and administration of policies, programs, and activities.

    36. 36 Scope of Practice Master’s (LMSW) The application of social work theory, knowledge, methods and ethics and the professional use of self to restore or enhance social, psychosocial, or biopsychosocial functioning of individuals, couples, families, groups, organizations and communities. Master’s social work practice requires the application of specialized knowledge and advanced practice skills in the areas of assessment, treatment planning, implementation and evaluation, counseling, supportive counseling, direct practice, case management, information and referral, supervision, consultation, education, research, advocacy, community organization and the development, implementation, and administration of policies and program activities. The practice of Master’s social work includes scope of practice under the LBSW and may include the practice of Clinical Social Work under clinical supervision.

    37. 37 Scope of Practice Clinical Social Work A specialty within the practice of social work that requires the application of social work theory, knowledge, methods, ethics, and the professional use of self to restore or enhance social, psychosocial, or biopsychosocial functioning of individuals, couples, families, groups, and/or persons who are adversely affected by social or psychosocial stress or health impairment. The practice of Clinical Social Work requires application of specialized clinical knowledge and advanced clinical skills in the areas of assessment, diagnosis and treatment of mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders, conditions, and addictions, including severe mental illness in adults and serious emotional disturbances in children. Treatment methods include the provision of individual, marital, couple, family, and group therapy, counseling, supportive counseling, direct practice and psychotherapy. Clinical social workers are qualified to use the DSM and the ICD and other diagnostic classifications systems in assessment, diagnosis, and other activities. Clinical social work is inclusive of scopes of practice under the LBSW and LMSW.
