Questions Primarily Used Do you enjoy coming to work? • Does WMU recognize employee achievements? • Does the organization seek input from its employees before making decisions? • Do you feel like the University values your opinion? • Does WMU do a good job of promoting from within? If this a good thing?

Interview 1Assistant Director • Enjoys coming to work everyday • Feels that the WMU values employees • Middle Management does ask for input on decisions • Upper management values opinions, doesn't feel like they are factored in to decision making • WMU promotes from within because it is easy. We lack outside opinions and get stuck with the same old way of doing things

Interview 2Assistant Director • Enjoys coming to work • Feels like WMU could do a better job of recognizing its employees • Feels like his opinion is valued by certain people within the organization • WMU does do good of a job promoting from within. Feels like we need to look for more outside candidates to fill positions.

  6. Interview 3Processor • Does not enjoy coming to work • She feels the University is diplomatic • Feels that the organization does not value her opinion • Thinks that they do a good job of promoting from within. This makes it hard for others to get hired into WMU

  7. Interview 4Operations Supervisor • Enjoys coming to work for the most part • Thinks the university is not diplomatic. Makes decisions from the top down without input • Feels the university does a good job of recognizing its employees • Thinks politics plays a role in promotions. Says the organization does a decent job of promoting from within

  8. Interview 5Associate Director • Enjoys coming to work everyday • In her 12 years things have gone back and forth. Feels like there is more of an authoritative leadership • Thinks the organization values her opinion • University does a good job of promoting from within • Says they do a good job of bringing in consultants for outside opinions

  9. Interview with Director • Talked about Decision Making • Garbage Can Model vs. Carnegie Model • She believes we operate under more of the Garbage Can Model • Gave a great example of Carnegie Model

  10. Common Answers • Most enjoy coming to work everyday • University does a good job of promoting from within • Majority felt like the organization valued their opinions • Talked about the WMU “Make a Difference Award”

  11. Observations • Differences on perceived leadership style of the University • Half thought WMU does a good job of recognizing its employees; half did not • Different opinions on if all the internal promoting was good for the organization
