  2. REASONS FOR STUDY • Increasing number of students who are tardy • Tardy students create loss of instruction time. • Tardy students create more aggravation and paperwork for teachers • Personal belief that secondary school should help produce employable citizens

  3. Studies show that main reason for young workers getting fired is lack of punctuality and attendance (Fitzgerald) Employers also list general lack of basic academic skills as problematic As many as 64 % of public schools report tardiness a major problem (NCES). KSDE reports nearly 1/3 of Kansas students read at basic or below basic level The majority of dropouts were tardy 10 times the semester before leaving school (SEDL) Juvenile Justice. Review of Literature:

STUDY DESIGN N 34 tenth to twelfth grade students at LAHS English Classes were given • Attitudinal Response Surveys • Stanford Nine Test of Reading Achievement to determine reading levels And The number of days each was tardy was tabulated and the mean days tardy were determined for their age and gender subgroup

  5. What Did I Find OUT? • I never want to be a researcher • More boys than girls read below grade level • The correlation between low level reading boys and their rate of tardiness is strongest • Girls reading below grade level have strong correlations between attitude and tardiness rates

  6. Questions to Ponder • Can one safely generalize findings when the target group is so small? • Is this a case of the chicken or the egg? (did attitude, tardiness or poor reading happen first?) • Can teachers impact school wide tardiness rates without further understanding how attitudes are changed?

  7. LESSONS LEARNED (?) • There will probably not be a nifty one size fits all effective program for reducing tardiness. • Teachers will need to target groups and work on student needs (reading, attitude, etc.) • There is a probable correlation between reading, tardiness rates and attitude which needs more study.
