  1. NAMI Georgia & The Atlanta VAMC Increased Partnership Through our extended Memorandum of Understanding

  2. How it began • 2007 • Contacts at VA in Trauma Recovery Program (TRP) who were linked to CIT • Presentation to TRP & books left to review • Determined may be best to start in outpatient MH • Contact made with Ms. Tucker • 2008 • 1st F2F class held in January 2008- (2 teachers came out of this class) • October 2008 Local Recovery Coordinator started. • LRC’s in VISN shared MOU information. Atlanta was the pilot site for Georgia. • Contact made with Jean at NAMI November 2008.

  3. January 2009 • 2nd F2F class held. • Monday night 5:30. • Got a lot of interest and folks to register, but not enough to come consistently to the class. • Ran through mid-February and stopped due to not enough participants. • Lessons learned: • Mondays aren’t best due to too many holidays. • 5:30 isn't late enough for our family members to get through Atlanta traffic. • Other days considered: Weds (but may be church nights for folks, no interest in Thurs/Friday due to end of week) leaves us Tuesday.

  4. May 2009-August 2009 • Mass advertising campaign started at VA to get the word out. • LRC had Medical Media create color posters and flyers. • LRC distributed throughout MH, VA information desks, almost wherever a flyer could go.  • LRC emailed information about the upcoming class to the MH service line staff several times. • LRC managed roster for class (registering folks, giving directions, etc). • NAMI found facilitators for the class (Jean stepped in herself to ensure its success- *Thank you!*) • Significant turnout (~25 registered for class) • Many vets themselves asking to attend (we’ll address in a few slides)

  5. September 2009-November 2009 3rd F2F class held • Great success • Family members wanted group to continue on. • Wondered about possibility of Family Support Group. • Began to brainstorm how to get approval- follow up on idea of a local MOU.

  6. NAMI Georgia/ Atlanta VAMC MOU • Need Peer Support- NAMI offers Peer-to-Peer & Connection • What a great resource! • How do we get those going here? • March 2009- legal contacted about how do we add additional groups from an outside agency? • June 2009- During the advertising campaign for F2F, many Veterans noted that they would also like to attend a similar group. The need for NAMI’s Peer-to-Peer and Connections groups became apparent.

  7. Extended MOU between NAMI GA & Atlanta VA • Talked about possibilities • Drafted an extended MOU based off the original one. • Worked with leadership (MHSL chief, compliance, public affairs) to create this extension. • When completed, signed by NAMI Georgia Executive Director and Director of the Atlanta VAMC.

  8. Since then… • It has been so helpful to have the MOU in place. • We’ve had 2 presentations of In Our Own Voice with interest to have more. • We currently have another Family-to-Family class going (midway though & getting great feedback) that began in September 2010. • We’ve also started NAMI Peer-to-Peer and Connection groups through connection to our PRRC.

  9. Thank you!
