  2. Today, We’re Going to… • Read Phillis Wheatley’s poem “To His Excellency, George Washington.” (Page 85) • Look at poetic devices she uses (her common writing style was one that was popular in England at the time).

  3. Everyone • Answer questions 1-7 on page 87. • Then, ye have a choice (yes, I said ‘ye.’ It keeps things interesting, I think…)(Plus, it helps clue me in to who is paying attention by who notices this. Well, this has gone on quite long now, hasn’t it?).

  4. Choices… • 1. Write a poem in a similar style to Wheatley’s (She writes the poem, asks for inspiration, and finds General Washington…) • 2. Imagine that G.W. has read this poem (I’m pretty sure he did, too.). What do you think Washington and Wheatley would say to each other if they met? Write a couple of paragraphs (2+ of 4-7 sentences) about what they might say to each other (think about how the country was at the time) and why you think that.
