  1. How to refute well Core Concept - Refutation

  2. Working together • For the first part of the session, we will work together to refute an argument. • Remember: • We are negative. • The topic is “The media presents teenagers as evil” • We are the second speaker for the negative

  3. The Argument • The media presents the cold, hard truth

  4. The media gives teenagers false qualities, which can present them as evil. They can say that they are drug dealers, binge drinkers and that they speed. Take Corey Worthington as an example. He had late night parties at his house, and he was presented as evil for it. Fair enough. Many teenagers are shown each and every night on A Current Affair, and these people are presented as evil.

  5. What should we pick out? • Find the week spots. • In this case, one week spot would be “that they speed” • They have not provided an example, and they have not elaborated on what they mean by “they speed” – it could mean they run fast, play sport fast, or they do the drug ‘speed’. They have not successfully identified an example.

  6. Another weak spot  • Corey Worthington was put on Big Brother, because he asked to be given a second chance. Big Brother proved that Corey was a good person. Big Brother is apart of the media, and it did not at any point say that he was evil.
