Bell Ringer • Using your composition book: • think about a time when you went on vacation or travelled out of town. • How did you get there? • What did you do? • Where did you eat? • What form(s) of communication did you use? • Brainstorm: List the technology that made these events easier for you than someone who might have made this same trip 100 years ago.

  5. Four major changes to American society included… • Factory and labor productivity. • Transportation (including the use of the automobile). • Communication. • Rural electrification.

  6. Technology extended progress into all areas of American life, including neglected rural areas. Rise of mechanization helped industries all over the united States to grow.

  7. Inventions That Improved Transportion

  8. Henry Ford and the use of the assembly line: Henry Ford did not invent the assembly line…he improved it (he gets the credit).

  9. He calls it the “Everyman’s Car.” • Henry Ford’s Model T will be the U.S.’s first affordable automobile.

  10. Results of improved transportation brought about by affordable automobiles: • Greater mobility. • Creation of jobs. • Growth of transportation-related industriessuch as… • Road Construction, Oil, Steel, Automobiles. • Movement from urban to suburban areas.

  11. Invention of the Airplane: • On December 17, 1903 brothers, Orville and Wilber Wright, (the Wright Brothers) will make the first successful powered flight.

  12. 1. Electric lighting. Thomas Alva Edison “invented” the light bulb and mechanical uses of electricity.

  13. 2. Provided Entertainment • Development of movies (motion pictures) Though many people will construct different types of projectors which produce moving pictures, Thomas Edison will invent the first “commercially successful” projector in 1896.

  14. 3. Improved Communication • Increased availability of telephones.Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone, improving communication. • .

  15. Development of the radioand broadcast industry • David Sarnoff created • first broadcasting station GuglielmoMarconi invents the radio

  16. Development of the movies(motion pictures). • Also goes under communication as well as • entertainment because of newsreels • News played at the beginning of movies

  17. 4. Created Labor-saving products that made life easier. Many inventions improved the lives of families and saved time such as the refrigerator, washing machine, water pump for running water, toaster, and electric stove.
