  1. What is the West Nile virus? By: Davis Oakes Austin Douglas

  2. Perspectives • The West Nile virus kills more than just humans. It also kills horses, squirrels, and especially birds. • New York City was the first to have experienced the WNV. Then it slowly spread across the United States.

  3. Symptoms • Four out of five people don’t know they were infected, and it was out of their blood in about 1 week. • Other symptoms are headache, high fever, neck stiffness, stupor (shock), disorientation (confused), coma, and muscle weakness.

  4. Reduce risk • Get rid of any standing water around your home. • Drain and refill bird baths often. • Unclog roof gutters. • Repair holes in window screen. • Don’t spend too much time outside, around dusk and dawn. • Avoid staying outside if wearing cologne or perfume. They draw insects.

  5. Chart

  6. How can we stop them? • There is not one way to stop all of them at once. Each case is treated individually. • There are also no vaccines for humans. The only vaccines for WNV are for horses.
