  2. Charter • Propose the simplest analysis technique / methodology that can accurately and repeatedly quantify the targeted chemical species in brake friction materials

  4. “Public Domain” Formulations • 4 suppliers have submitted samples, 4 still pending • Samples from one supplier have been prepared for analysis in cooperation with Washington Ecology • California and Washington scheduled to have test results and feedback on methods by week 24 (Oregon has dropped out of testing) • Outside laboratories will then be scheduled (2-4 weeks for results) • Results will not be published until all laboratories data is received • Materials (1-6) and laboratories (A-E) are both “blind”

SAE J2975 - Measurement of Copper and other elements in Brake Friction Materials • Sample Generation / Collection • Process description and guidelines for sampling • Sample Preparation • Acid Digestion via EPA Method 3050B (Cu, Pb, Sb, Ni, Zn, Cr, Cd) • Analysis • Inductively Coupled Plasma – Atomic Emission Spectroscopy via EPA Method 6010C • Note: Hex Cr, Hg and asbestiform fibers will follow other appropriate EPA methods

  6. Next Steps Results will be statistically analyzed and discussed among the taskforce Conduct necessary testing to verify any differences between suppliers Finalize and put up for ballot SAE J procedure Publish analytical results / methodology in “refereed” journal Explore establishment of NIST standard
