  1. What are the issues? Amber, add your beginning slides here and see how they fit with what I did. Nancy, I have a slide ready for the lead manager chart you did. I also put a reference page, but you may have to add any references you used for example, Nancy, make sure you reference the Baldrige graphic and the survey we are giving at the end of our presentation. I will reference all the sterling, glasser, and baldrige info that I put into the slides. I ADDED REFERENCING NOTES THERE FOR YOU TO USE AS EXAMPLES.   3. Quality World How Do We Satisfy Our Basic Needs Positive Outlook What Motivates Us? How Do We Want Our Life To Be?

Who is William Glasser? • Internationally recognized psychiatrist. • Primary focus was that all students should meet academic standards before progressing to the next objective, unit, grade, etc. • His belief: Mastery of learning objectives = Progress. • Developed “Choice Theory” which explains how and why people behave. • Understanding Choice Theory will help teachers design, assess, and analyze instructional effectiveness.

What is Sterling Quality? • A management system developed for organizations to improve performance. • A premier model for continuous improvement. • Based on best practices in seven categories: Leadership, Strategic Planning, Customer and Market Focus, Measurement, Analysis, and Knowledge Management, Workforce Focus, Process Management, and Organizational Results. • Criteria derived from the National Malcolm Baldrige Award.

Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award • Malcolm Baldrige was Secretary of Commerce from 1981 – 1987, and a proponent of quality management. • The Baldrige Award is given by the President of the United States to businesses-small and large-and to education organizations that apply and are judged to be outstanding in the seven quality areas mentioned before. • Means of establishment – To create a standard of excellence that would help U.S. organizations achieve world-class quality.

Sterling Quality 1: Leadership • How will Principal O’Connor guide and sustain his organization? • How will Principal O'Connor promote his organization’s vision and values? • How will Principal O'Connor communicate with the workforce and stakeholders? • How will Principal O'Connor focus on actions to improve performance?

However, it is essential that the lead manager is able to persuade employees to continually upgrade their system of communicating to one that builds trust.

Sterling Category 2: Strategic Planning • Each of the 7 Sterling Categories will be a committee at Hickory Ridge High School. • Each committee will have a teacher as the facilitator. • Every committee will have a representative from each department along with a member from the cafeteria, custodian, and paraprofessional support staff. • Each committee will review previous data related to their sterling category, and make individual goals based on our S.I.P.

Sterling Category 3: Customer and Market Focus(Also known as student and stakeholder focus) • Who are our customers? • THE STUDENTS • Are we meeting the needs of the students? • Implement a student satisfaction survey • Who are our stakeholders? • Parents, business partners, and community members. • Are we meeting the needs of our stakeholders? • Implement a stakeholder satisfaction survey • What can we do to improve the student focus? • What can we do to improve the stakeholder focus?

Hickory Ridge High School will participate in data collection in the following areas: Based on the School Improvement Plan, Hickory High School’s Leadership Team will create three school based goals in Reading, Writing, and Math. 2) Each Subject Area Teacher will develop three academic goals based on results from prior student achievement data, and these will be the goals on their Individual Professional Development Plan. 3) Each student will develop three individual academic goals based on Reading , Writing, and Math, and these goals will be kept in a Data Binder. 4) Parents will be asked regularly to compare their child’s academic goals to his or her performance at school. Sterling Quality Training • All staff members • Throughout the school year • Follow up trainings for collaboration and consistency across the staff • Extended training – Choosing Excellence Training which combines the Glasser Model of choice theory and the questioning process to the Sterling Model to form a “Quality World” at Hickory High School.

  17. Site-Based Teams • Leadership Team – A representative from each department including support members. • Grade Level Teams • Sterling Quality Committees – A representative from each department will be member of one Sterling Quality Committee. There will be one facilitator for each committee.

  18. Show Me the Learning • Each department will find their lowest 25% of students based on prior achievement tests. They will also research the sub-groups the school needs to reach in order to obtain A.Y.P. • Monthly Data Meetings held at each department. • On the agenda: Based on in-class assessments, each teacher will provide numbers of proficient and non-proficient students. • Based on proficiency numbers, the team will discuss ways to improve instruction and increase student achievement.

Sterling Quality Category 6: Process Management • What are Hickory High School’s processes? • Staff Handbook • How does the principal ensure the processes are followed? • Yearly Staff Evaluations • Consistent Classroom Walk-Through Evaluations • How does the school evaluate their effectiveness? • Implement a Yearly School Satisfaction Survey • How does the school improve their processes? • Revisit the staff handbook each year. • Ensure proper trainings are provided for staff development. • Review the results from the school survey and create goals to improve. • When new processes are implemented, allow staff feedback such as a plus / delta, for suggestions on how the new process is or isn’t working.

Sterling Category 7: Organizational Performance Results • Review the goals for each of the 6 other Sterling Categories. • Compare the results to the school wide goals based on the School Improvement Plan. • Are the results improving? • Compare Hickory’s results other high schools that are implementing the Sterling Model. • How do Hickory’s results compare to high performing high schools in the district?
