  2. Why nurses leave for private hospitals or abroad? • Research findings had shown that: • Lack of recognition for nurses as a whole • Poor salary that does not commensurate with heavy workload. • Poor working environment

  3. Malaysian nurses attrition rate / yr- 400 Malaysian nurses are high in demand in –Saudi Arabia, Brunei and UK Thus, our country lost our Senior Specialized nurses. As a result our front liners are young and less experiences

  4. MNA collaborate with Nursing Division to plan for retention • A clear career structure for nurses: • A nurse can choose to be : Clinical Nurse Specialist, Nurse Educator, Nurse Administrator, • We have Diploma, Degree, Masters and PHD • Nurse Researcher, Public Health Nurse, Midwife , including the school leavers male and female who take up 4 yrs degree in nursing.

  5. Some of The role of NNA- MNA • Once a year- Dialogue with the Secretary General of Health • Negotiation on nursing issues with prepared presentations and papers . • Negotiation with policy makers and government using research as evidenced based.

  6. Nurses recognitions: • 2005- Graduate scheme had been approved • 2005- Getting back Nursing Division • 2006- Obtained the Post of DON for the first time • 2007- Nursing is directly under the DG unlike other Allied health professionals

  7. Some more recognitions… • Retirement age is extended from 56 – 58 • Critical allowances is 15% of drawn salary • Living allowances ( COLA) - based on where you work, if you live in the city it will be higher. • Housing Allowances depends on salary place of work per month

  8. Reemployment of retired nurses at her last position Pensions from Public sector- ½ of the last drawn pay for life • In private sector 11%employee contribution and employer 25% -EPF • Allowed to change place of work from Private to public sector.

  9. Annual leave from 25- 35 days per year depending on seniority • Leave for performing for Haj once a life time • Confinement leave from 40 days to 60 days , and the NCWO is fighting for 90 days for all women workers.( up to 5 children)

  10. Paternity leave – one week • Breast feeding leave up to 3 months from birth • Special areas e.g Mental health and Radiography will get extra 2 weeks leave • Nurses get study leave or ½ pay leave to follow husband abroad

  11. Those nurse working in rural area- car loan with interest free • Community nurses have the opportunity to climb up carrer ladder to be Staff nurses and equal opportunity to be Nurse Leaders.

  12. . Should we die, the next of kin will get benevolent aid. Hospitalization for our spouse, parents and children below 21 years of age will get the same privilege as the nurses get.

  13. The first time in the history the Nurses had been recognized to be trusted to be the Director of the 4 hospitals in Sarawak . • Post basic allowances • Scholarships to study . • Excellent Award – with pay rise

  14. Conclusion • All those strategies have been materialized • As a result, decrease in attrition rate • Less no. of nurses resigned from the job • Very few imported nurses recruited into public Sectors as compared to some years ago.
