  1. Unit 1 Vocabulary:The World of Advertising Most definitions and example sentences are taken from either the Merrium-Webster Online Learners’s Dictionary or the NorthStar 3 Reading and Writing Book (3rd Edition)

  2. Advertisement • Noun: something shown to the public to help sell a product • The advertisement will appear in 3 magazines. • I saw an advertisement for a new car on TV last night.

  3. Advertising • Noun: the business of creating advertisements • The problems of global advertising have become larger than ever.

  4. Firm • Synonyms: company, business • Noun: a small company • To sell a product in a foreign country, a firm often has to write new ads. • Adjective: hard or solid (not soft) • I like firm mattresses.

  5. Commercial • Noun: a TV or radio advertisement • In Spain, there are a lot of commercials for perfume and cologne. • Adjective: related to the buying and selling of goods and services • The city wanted to encourage commercial rather than residential development along the river

  6. Goal • Synonyms:aim, objective, target • Noun: something you are trying to do or achieve • Her primary goal is to get a college degree.

  7. Convince (someone) • Synonym: persuade • Verb: to persuade someone to believe or do something(needs an object) • The advertisement convinced me to buy the product.

  8. Impress • Synonyms: dazzle, amaze • Verb: to make someone feel admiration or interest • The goal of advertising is to impress people and make them buy a product. • Often used as (be) impressed • I am impressed with your positive attitude.

  9. Impression • Synonyms: impact, influence, mark • Noun: 1. an idea, feeling, or opinion about someone or something • His first impression of Greenville was positive. 2. something made by pressing or stamping a surface

  10. Hold (someone’s) attention • Verb phrase: to keep someone interested; to keep someone’s attention • The speaker held the audience’s attention.

  11. Pay attention • Verb phrase: to listen and watch carefully • The audience paid attention to the speaker. • Pay attention vs. Hold people’s attention • The audience pays attention. • The speaker holds the audience's attention.

  12. Exotic • Synonyms: foreign, unusual • Adjective: 1. from another part of the world 2. very different, strange, or unusual • In Brazil, Coca Cola sells a drink flavored with guarana, an exotic South American fruit.

  13. Catch someone’s eye • Verb phrase: to attract someone’s attention • The red car passing by caught his eye. • I want the size of our advertisement to catch people’s eye. • When using this phrase, make sure to identify who or what catches someone’s eye.

  14. Eye-catching • Synonym: noticeable • Adjective: very noticeable because of being unusual or attractive • The advertisement is very eye-catching.

  15. Catchy • Synonym: memorable • Adjective: something you hear and remember • McDonalds has a catchy jingle.

  16. Message • Synonym: communication, meaning, point • Noun: • a piece of information • Did you get my text message? 2. an important idea (that someone is trying to express in a book, movie, speech, etc) • I liked the book, but I didn’t really agree with the book’s message.

  17. Competition • Synonym: opponent • Noun: 1. a person or group that you are competing against - Pepsi is Coca Cola’s competition 2. a contest - American Idol is a popular singing competition

  18. Market • Noun: 1. A place where products are bought and sold • I went to the market to buy milk. 2. A group of buyers for a product (country or people) • New markets are opening up all over the world. • Advertisers are trying to appeal to the youth market.

  19. Market • Synonyms: promote, sell • Verb: to promote a product • These products are being aggressively marketed to teenagers through television ads.

  20. Campaign • Noun: a group of activities with the same goal (in advertising, politics and the military) • The goal of a Pepsi campaign is to sell Pepsi. • Verb: to lead or take part in a campaign • President Obama campaigned to become president of the U.S.A.

  21. The “Got Milk” advertising campaign is very effective.

  22. Global • Synonyms: Worldwide, international • Adjective: involving the entire world • English is becoming a global language

  23. Succeed • Synonym: triumph • Verb: to achieve the correct or desired result • Advertisements that succeed use different styles of communication in different parts of the world.

  24. Fail • Synonym: be unsuccessful, to lose • Verb: to not succeed • The ads failed to sell cars to single women without children.
