  1. SportVU Player Tracking

  2. Agenda • Day 1 • System architecture and setup • Day 2 • SportVU Applications • Day 3 • Analyzing game data + trouble shooting • Basketball game

  3. System components • Sensors • IPU – Image Processing Unit • Server – Tracking • Database • DataRecorder • StatRecorder • MOU – Main Operation Unit • DPU – Data Production Unit • StatVU • RadarVU • AnalyzeVU • GOS – Graphic Overlay Server

  4. Information Flow video cameras IPU’s MOU Image processing information PTZ Player/ball positions Server DPU StatVU AnalyzeVU RadarVU Viz Create graphic display StatRecorder Database DataRecorder

  5. Connecting the hardware Tracking Operator (MOU) SportVU Cameras SportVU Server (Root)

  6. System Operation Pre Game • Choose site • Hardware installation • Sensors (IPU cameras, ptz) • Connecting components • Hardware/Software Configuration • Setup • Start applications & Recorders During Game • SportVU Operation • MOU, RadarVU, StatVU, AnalyzeVU

  7. Choose Installation Site • cameras must cover the entire playing field • unobstructed • glare-free Therefore: • halfway line of the playing field. • 13 to 30 meters above ground, and between 25 to 50 meters away from the nearest field line (recommended). • Avoid direct sunlight. • No obstacles that block the line of view • Spectators moving in front of the camera • Waving flags • T.V. crew and/or equipment

  8. Pre-game - MOU • Start MOU • Set up the game (before arriving) • Create game, and • Create new teams and players, or • Load existing team from the database • Set field dimensions • Player roster • Setup • Build background

  9. SportVU Operation : MOU • Team selection • Identify players during game • Adjustments at start of each half • Time • Goalies • Team goal direction • See demo with application

  10. System Operation Timeline (1 of 3) • Before the game, in the office: • Prepare team pictures. • Create teams with MOU Game Editor; create new teams (or select old team) and add/modify players. • Make sure \\ROOT\SportVU\live\dataRecorder\data is empty (or otherwise contains data you are willing to overwrite). • Enter field dimensions. • Check all graphics to be sure player pictures and team logos look okay. • Before the game starts, at the field: (usually arrive 3-5 hours in advance) • Assemble system. • Run the 3 IPUs. • Run Setup Wizard to calibrate the system. • Restart IPUs, and start the server application. • Run the whole system to be sure everything works okay (DataRecorder, StatRecorder, MOU, StatVU, AnalyzeVU, RadarVU).

  11. System Operation Timeline (2 of 3) • Just before the game begins: (about 15-30 minutes before) • Run DataRecorder. • Run StatRecorder. • Put the playing players on the field. • As the game begins: • Team Selection. • Toggle sides if necessary. • Start tracking. (Operator starts working). • Enter the time (some time during the first half). • At half time: • Toggle sides. • Delete the goalkeepers.

  12. System Operation Timeline (3 of 3) • As second half begins: • Identify goal keepers in each side. • Enter the time (some time during the second half, i.e., 65:30.). • End of game: • Stop system: close DataRecorder, StatRecorder and all applications. • Backup the game data: • Copy the LIVE directory to GamesArchive and rename it to the game name • Create SQL backup file

  13. To Be Continued…

  14. AnalyzeVU General Buttons

  15. AnalyzeVU Shortcuts

  16. Pre-game - DPU • Run StatRecorder, DataRecorder • Run RadarVU, StatVU, AnalyzeVU • AnalyzeVU • Team list • Team colour (also for RadarVU) • StatVU • Set language • Check graphics (player pictures, logos etc.) (before arriving)

  17. SportVU Operation : AnalyzeVU • Create replays • Plot players, ball • New player • Complete incomplete path • Ball path • Add visual commentary and effects • Arrow • Director effects • Single player effects • Change course • Hide • Change team • See demo of application

  18. SportVU Operation : StatVU • Create statistics displays • Preview • Play • Transistions On, off, • Clear • See demo of application

  19. SportVU Operation : RadarVU • RadarVU • Connect RadarVU to viz • The RadarVU application loads in an MS-DOS Console window. It has two active control buttons: • P — toggles the streaming of the players’ locations to the graphic engine. • J — toggles a label of the players’ jersey numbers in the graphics.

  20. Troubleshooting (1 of 3) • Frame Rate of a Camera is Low (<12fps) • Causes • A lack of light • A slow connection of under 1Gbps between the camera and the ROOT computer. • Necessary Action: • 1. Check that the camera’s iris is completely open. If it is night time and there are no lights, there is nothing you can do until the lights are turned on. • 2. Check that the connection speed between the camera and the ROOT computer is 1Gb; do so by looking at the colors of the lights on the Ethernet cards installed on root. You should have one green light and one orange light. If there are two green lights, you are connected on 100Mbs. You will need to replace the Ethernet cable for another CAT5e/CAT6 cable. Take note that even if 1 of the 8 cables inside the CAT5e/CAT6 cable is damaged, the cable will not perform at 1Gbps and will need to be replaced. • Communication Error between Computers and/or Applications • Cause: • Configuration error(s) that causes system to work only as a standalone workgroup (usually named SportVU), with no other network connections. • Necessary Action: • 1. Do not enable Wireless Network Connection on any of the system computers. • 2. Do not put the computers on a domain. • 3. Do not connect the computers to devices that communicate via IP address. • 4. The computers do not have a static IP and therefore will need to be rebooted (or have their IP’s renewed) after any modification to their network structure.

  21. Troubleshooting (2 of 3) • Error in Calibration Result (>4) • Causes: • Faulty calibration input parameters. • Incorrect input of the field’s dimensions. • Necessary Action: • 1. Consider re-calibrating. Verify that you marked no more than the 4 required lines, 5 points a line. Be sure to save the calibration when it’s done. • 2. Verify the size of the field. Go down and measure it, if necessary. • No Statistics on StatVU • Cause: • Game time was not entered in the MOU. If the game time hasn’t been entered, the StatVU won’t be able to calculate statistics. • Necessary Action: • 1. Verify that you entered the game time in the MOU. If not, enter it at this time. See Setting Game Time on page 3. • 2. Check StatVU for statistics.

  22. Troubleshooting (3 of 3) • Players’ Team Identification Quality is Deteriorating • Cause: • Perhaps the lighting at the game has changed—for example, the sun has just set and the stadium lights were turned on. You will need to re-identify the team players in the MOU. • Necessary Action: • In the Main Operation Unit window, follow these steps for each Camera in the MOU: • 1. Right-click the camera frame and select Team Selection > Clear. • 2. Right-click the camera frame and select Team Selection > Get Frame. • 3. Choose 5 examples from each of the teams that may appear in that frame. Use Send and Get Frame to capture a new frame. • 4. Right-click the camera frame and select Team Selection > Calculate.
