  1. Evaluation question 2: How does your media product represent particular social groups? Leah Watts

  2. Social groups My music magazine and existing magazines have a lot of things in common as I used these as inspiration for my own, showing that my music magazine will fit in with the indie genre and fit in with my target audience and social groups. What they have in common: • Colour scheme • Coverline positioning • Masthead and image layout (image on top of masthead) My music magazine represents a wide range of social groups including teenagers and students as this is the age range my target audience is. The social groups also include both genders as this is also my target audience. I aimed my magazine at representing the typical indie girl and boy who love music and are unique and fun, but also at cross over genres as some people may like indie as well as other genres so I have incorporated things into my magazine that others will like, making the social group a wider range of people. My indie music magazine: Existing indie magazines:

  3. Existing contents pages My contents page: My contents page links with and represents my social group (indie lovers of both genders, teenagers, university students etc) as the main image I have used is set in an ‘everyday’ setting to get accross the meaning that anyone can do what she’s doing if they try hard. The way she is also wearing a bandana and holding a guitar reflects the indie genre which also reflects the social group. I have also used the same few colours as I did on the front cover which represents the social group as they are quite simple and basic which represents the social group as it is all about the music. My contents page also has things in common with existing music magazines which are indie, showing my links with that so it represents my social group to an extent as indie fans already enjoy existing magazines.

  4. For my double page spread I tried to fit the conventions of a magazine as best as I could. I did this to represent my social group as this is what would appeal to them if they had already seen this in music magazines. I used the image and the article in the double page spread to represent my social group as this is what indie fans would be interested in if the artist was indie and new as she has been ‘DISCOVERED’. The main image on this page represents the social group as she is dressed very casually wearing a shirt instead of really ‘dressy’ clothing. She is also holding a guitar reflecting the genre and maybe even the fans of the genre. My double page spread:

  5. Who is represented in my music magazine? All of the classes in society are represented through my magazine especially middle class and working class this is highlighted by the price of £2.50 as this is quite a cheap price for a new up and coming music magazine and would be suitable for my target audience of 17-24 year olds, where they don’t have that much money but they have money to spare for something like this. The social group that is represented is unique individuals who don’t just like pop music and like a variety of different music which indie is because of all the sub-genres that are involved in it. As my magazine is aimed aimed at both genders this makes my social group a wider variety of people. However on this issue of my magazine the images that are involved are women making the magazine seem dominant by women but throughout the issues males would also be included showing the social group is both male and females who enjoy going to gigs, having fun and enjoying indie music. However the use of females in my magazine may also attract males as this is what they may look for in a magazine.

  6. To make sure my magazine was suitable for both females and males I chose the colour scheme of red, white and black, as these are generally stereotyped as being both gender colours. The colours also reflect news which helps my social group and audience to understand what kind of magazine it is. Also these colours are often used for indie magazines so it also helps them to see what genre of music the magazine is mainly. Indie fans are stereotyped as being white, whereas I have tried to aim my magazine at all ethnicities to show a broad audience as anyone can enjoy any genre of music. Overall my social group/indie fans are very individual, unique and outgoing reflecting my magazine as being a fun magazine to read.
