Laura-Kate Mapp Marketing graduate – Aston University The placement year is the major reason I chose Aston Business School. I assumed that everyone took a placement year at university, but now that I’m working I realise this isn’t the case. I am now involved in recruitment marketing for the KPMG graduate scheme across a number of universities in the midlands. This includes getting involved with sponsorship, advertising, running skills sessions and generally enhancing the profile of KPMG. I am also responsible for supervising and instructing student brand managers on each campus. My placement played a large role as once I’d graduated I already had work experience so was ahead of graduates of other universities who may have had a similar degree but had no experience; it made me stand out.
European Business School Dominique Sedar - 2004 Graduate BA (Hons) International Business Studies with Management & SpanishNationality: British Dominique completed her EBS London degree in 2004 with a BA (Hons) in International Business and Spanish. She excelled in her Creative Management module, taking on the large task of solely organising the first ever student run Psychology play. Dominique relished this task, and knew then that her future was in combining creativity with management. “I loved the challenge of making the event creative with lighting and props and simultaneously managing the event, making sure we were on budget, ensuring props were delivered on time with everything running like clockwork!” Following various internships, Dominique now works as Event Manager for the hugely successful Event Management Company, Gill Branston & Associates.
John Hiscock Communication and Digital Media BA (Hons) University of Brighton John graduated in communication and digital media and is now working for GMTV – Europe’s biggest breakfast show. As part of his course he undertook a month’s placement at GMTV, which was organised by the university’s placements office. The work was varied and included stints in the promotions office and out on location. He was invited back for a further month’s work experience and was then encouraged to apply for GMTV’s graduate training scheme. He is now working as a runner and will then have the opportunity to become an assistant researcher. “The university really helped to get my career started by arranging for my placement and helping me to break into what is a really competitive industry”.
