Characters “My Friend” • A distant cousin of Buddy. • A woman in her sixties. • She has short white hair. • She is petite and energetic. • She likes to have fun and act childish. • “Buddy” • A seven year old boy. • He has lived with his distant cousin for as long as he can remember. • He is also energetic like his cousin.

  3. Summary As a seven year old boy, Buddy has been living with his distant cousin, who is over sixty, for as long as he can remember. Throughout the story, Buddy and his cousin, who he refers to as “My Friend,” experience many great adventures together. These adventures include making fruitcakes, chopping down their own Christmas trees, and making and exchanging kites as Christmas presents to give to each other. Towards the end of the story, “Those who Know Best decide that I belong in a military school” (Capote 284). This upsets Buddy because he can no longer stay with his childish cousin. He knows now that he has to leave his old house and old friends to a new house and make new friends. “…I keep searching the sky. As if I expected to see, rather like hearts, a lost pair of kites hurrying towards heaven” (Capote 284). Now Buddy realizes that his childish cousin is truly gone.

  4. Point-Of-View • This short story is told in first-person point-of-view. • Buddy narrates the entire story. 1

Plot Crisis • The Crisis in A Christmas Memory is that Buddy and “my friend” get separated. • Climax • The climax of the story is “My friend” dies. • Resolution • Buddy looks up in the sky and remembers the good times he shared with “my friend.” Buddy learns to appreciate the little things in life such as family traditions.

  6. Setting Time Place “A Morning in Late November. A coming of winter morning more than twenty years ago” (Capote 273). • “…Consider the kitchen of a spreading old house in a country town. A great black stove is its main feature; but there is also a big round table and a fireplace with rocking chairs placed in front of it” (Capote 273).

  7. Theme • The theme of A Christmas Memory is cherishing every moment in your life because you don’t know how much longer you have to enjoy it.
