  1. HIGHLIGHTS OF LONDON 2012 OLYMPICS Prepared by ; Ms. Mary Yvonne Muhinda

INTRODUCTION • The 2012 London Olympics officially begun on 27th of July in a Royal manner with the world witnessing the greatest ceremony of all times. • Producer Danny Boyle and English film director, directed the opening ceremony of the games which was given name as Isles of Wonder. • However,Queen Elizabeth II officially opened the Olympic games.

  3. The 17-Day event witnessed various new records and a list of memorable moments. About 10,820 athletes from 204 nations participated in the 302 events in 26 Sports. The London Olympics 2012 finally ended after a grand closing ceremony at the Olympics which was on stadium on Sunday. The 2012 Olympic games were special as it was for the first time that every nation and sport included female competitors. Saudi Arabia, Brunei and Qatar were a part of history as they included female athletes in their squad for first times.

  4. CEREMONIES The London 2012 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony took place at 9pm on 27 July 2012. The Ceremony welcomed the finest athletes from more than 200 nations for the start of the London 2012 Olympic Games, marking an historic third time the capital has hosted the world’s biggest and most important sporting event. Ceremony reflected the key themes and priorities of the London 2012 Games, based on sport, inspiration, youth and urban transformation.

  5. Opening ceremony • The Opening Ceremony is a celebration showcasing the best of the Host Nation. • The Ceremony will provide an opportunity for the world to view the artistic expression and the culture of our Host City and the UK. • The Ceremony will kick off with the sound of the largest harmonically tuned bell in Europe, produced by the Whitechapel Foundry, and the Stadium will be transformed into the British countryside for opening scene ‘Green and Pleasant’.

The opening ceremony included; • Receiving the Head of State; The Head of State of the Host Country was welcomed by the President of the IOC and Her Majesty the Queen will be greeted by Jacques Rogge . • Parade of Athletes; Nation by nation and teams enter in alphabetical order, according to the language of the Host Country, apart from the Greek team, which enters first for the Olympics, • Speeches; Once all the nations have arrived into the Stadium, LOCOG Chair Seb Coe will give a speech, followed by Jacques Rogge. They will end their speeches by inviting the Head of State to officially declare the Games open

Olympic Anthem and Flag; Once the Games have been declared open, the Olympic Flag is then carried into the Stadium and hoisted into the air as the respective Anthem is played. • Oaths; A participating athlete, judge and coach from the Host Nation stand on the rostrum and, holding a corner of the IOC flag in their left hand and raising their right, take the Oath, vowing to compete and judge according to the rules of their respective sport. • The Torch and Cauldron; The big finale is the entrance of the Olympic Flame into the Stadium. It is passed through the athletes to the final Torchbearer, who will ceremoniously light the Cauldron, indicating the beginning of the Games. The Flame will continue to burn for the whole of the Games.

Closing Ceremony • The London 2012 Olympic Games Closing Ceremony started at 9pm on 12 August 2012 and celebrated the amazing sporting feats of the athletes who have taken part in the Games with the ultimate after show party. • The Ceremony featured more than 4,100 performers, including 3,500 adult volunteers and 380 schoolchildren.

  10. The following took place; • March of the athletes; The flag bearers of the participating delegations enter the Stadium in single file, closely followed by the athletes. At the Closing Ceremony, athletes march together, not by nationality. • Flags and speeches; Three national flags are hoisted on flagpoles one at a time, while the corresponding national anthems are played: • Extinguishing of the Flame ; The Olympic Flame, which has been burning in the Cauldron since the opening of the Games, is then extinguished

Team Welcome Ceremonies; Team Welcome Ceremonies traditionally take place before the Opening Ceremony of the Games. • Team Welcome Ceremonies don’t occur just once: they are repeated throughout several days for each nation. • These included; • The Truce Wall • The National Youth Theatre • The national anthems

Victory Ceremonies; London 2012’s aim is to create a series of exciting and theatrical Victory Ceremonies that represent the UK and ensure that the athletes and their achievements sit at the heart of the Games. • There are 302 Victory Ceremonies in over 30 venues across the London 2012 Olympics, and they form one of the most prestigious aspects of the Games. • A Victory Ceremony usually takes place soon after a medal event finishes.
