  3. Informational Material • When and how will it happen? • Why should it happen? • What is recyclable? • What is NOT recyclable? • What must I do?

  4. When and How? • When: • September 1st, 2008 – Single Stream Recycling • How: • City of Griffin will deliver blue recycling bins to campus. • Recycling containers will be disbursed throughout campus buildings for employee/student convenience. • Physical plant will pick up recyclables from a central location inside each building.

  5. Why should it happen? • Why: • The University of Georgia Griffin Campus would like to be a model for other businesses in helping to preserve our resources and our environment. • We need your help to become stewards of our environment.

  6. What is recyclable? Paper waste – 77% is recyclable • Magazines • Phone books • Newspapers • Catalogs • Cardboard • Copier Paper • Envelopes • Sticky notes • Fertilizer Bags 100% paper

  7. What is recyclable? Plastic Bottles – 25 million are tossed per hr • Drink (Soda/Water) bottles & lids • Milk Jugs • Band that wraps the paper box • Flower Flats & Pots • 5 Gallon plastic buckets, tubs and trays • Plastic bags (Wal-Mart, Kroger) • Gladware / Ziploc containers – unsoiled only

  8. What is recyclable? Glass • Drink bottles • Juice bottles • Jars – unsoiled (pickle, etc) • Glass bottles which held chemicals should be disposed of with bio-hazard procedures.

  9. Bio-Medical Sharps • Needles • Razors • Blades / Scalpels • Bio-Medical items (unsterilized) • should be placed in a Sharps container which will be provided by Physical Plant.

  10. Bio-Hazard Sharps • Needles • Razors • Blades / Scalpels • Includes – brown chemical bottles • Bio-Hazard items, which are items that could be potentially contaminated by infectious substances, should be placed in a Bio Hazard RED Bag until autoclaved. Once autoclaved, place in BLACK bag, then store in a safe location until Physical Plant can pick up.

  11. What is NOT Recyclable? • Paper - Non-recyclables: • Tyvek Envelopes • Paper towels, plates, tissues, cups, and napkins • Carbon Paper • Photographs (Photo paper) • Waxed paper or container boxes • Wrapping paper • Fertilizer bags lined with plastic

  12. What is NOT Recyclable? • Plastic - Non-recyclables: • Plastic cups, forks, spoons, and knives • Motor oil bottles • Food soiled containers • Drink pouches / straws • Containers w/no neck • (i.e. margarine tubs)

  13. What is NOT Recyclable? • Glass - Non-recyclables: • Ceramic or clay (pots, cups, or plates) • Vases • Dishes • Drinking Glasses • Mirrors • Window or auto glass • Light bulbs – recyclable through • another source – do not place in • garbage

  14. What must I do? • Place all recyclable items into a recycle receptacle located in your building. • Place garbage (anything not recyclable or questionable) into the garbage container. • That’s It!!
