Some Background • AIPE was first launched in summer 2002 • Co-sponsors of AIPE • School of Economics and Finance, HKU • The Fund for American Studies (TFAS) • George Mason University • Location: The University of Hong Kong • Institute dates: July 5 to July 27, 2013 • Other ventures by TFAS: Washington, DC; Czech Republic; Greece; Chile

  4. First Thing to Clarify • “Political Economy” in AIPE does not refer to the narrowly defined viewpoints of the Marxist persuasion • It is broadly taken as the modern day political and economic ideas that affect individual freedom, social interaction and international affairs

Second Thing to Clarify • AIPE is not vacation time; it is a both academic and cultural exchange program • It is academic, so participants are required to attend class, do the readings, take part in discussion, study and take an exam • It is cultural exchange, so participants are required to think, express, share, discuss, argue, clarify, interact, … • Participants are expected to study, live and get together with each other throughout the three weeks

What Are There For Participants • Intellectual enrichment and development • Deeper understanding of relevant ideas • Broadening personal horizons • Interpersonal connections • In touch with more than 60 future Asian leaders of your generation • Full-time close and intensive encounter with teachers, guest speakers and fellow students • Close alumni network

What Are There For Participants • 3 units of academic credit awarded by George Mason University • On the whole, it will be 3 weeks of memorable lifetime experience • Scholarship will be offered to successful HKU candidates to cover the program fee of US$3,750, which includes tuition fee, textbooks, accommodation fee and meals

The Three Weeks Lectures • 2 courses on economics and American studies taught by some of the finest professors from USA • Interactive teaching and learning style (with free and open discussion, debates, games, etc.) • Students learn to think analytically and from various perspectives • Students learn to express their views with confidence, understand and consider others’ views, and appreciate cultural differences

Admission and Application • Selection criteria • Good academic standing • Good English communication skills • Open-minded and outgoing character • What to submit • Application form, resume, transcript, 1 writing, reference letters, English proficiency proof, photo, statement of how much financial support would be needed
