  2. Monday April 21st JE #8 should girls be allowed to compete with boys in sports? If not why? If so which sports? • Objectives: /aka what I’m learning & the take aways 1) practice doing MC under timed and similar conditions 2) independent reading and analytical practice 3) reflection on learning • I can do an MC timed for a quiz grade • I can read “The Silent season of a Hero” from pages 431 – 447 for tomorrow and I will write an evaluative analysis of the piece using at least 4 quotes to support my analysis. • I can remember to do a take away

  3. Funsies - connotations • Why shouldn’t one tell a joke while ice skating? • The ice might crack up • What’s a dog’s least favorite place to shop? • A flea market • Why did the freight car go back to school? • It needed to be trained or retrained.

  4. Tuesday April 22nd JE #9 In what ways can athletes be heroes? Explain. Why this image and how does it relate to the journal? • Objectives: /aka what I’m learning & the take aways 1) identify Greek/latin roots and practice using them 2) assess independet reading and analysis 3) practice utilizing notes on effective writing 4) practice more reading analysis on sports 5) analyze the results of the MC and rectify and teach self to find better answers • reading • I can record the Root word of the day #1 • I can hand in my evaluative analysis of “The Silent Season of a hero” • I can take notes for effective writing • I can understand the assignment for “The Proper Place for Sports” page 449 and do the independent assignment • I can review my MC results – and to gain points back for wrong answers I can explain why the correct answer is correct and get ½ points back - due when you turn it in – will change the grade when submitted with the original. • I can remember to do a take away

Copy the word and the definition in your own words, then create one made up word using it and think of two actual words that it comprises in today’s EnglishWord Root Of The Day #1 phillove • The root word phil comes from a Greek verb meaning to love. • Some common words derived from phil are philosopher, philanthropist, and bibliophile. • Note that phil can begin the word as in philosopher, or end it as in bibliophile. But wherever it occurs you can be assured that phil has something to do with love.

Analysis: more with quotations • 1. be sure the quotes is useful – that you will have something to say about it • 2. introduce the quotation and qualify it before inserting it – warm the audience up to what the quotation will say, and the explain how that is related to your point of view – don’t assume the audience will make the connections you are trying to make. • So in practice you write: X states in Blank, “ ___________.” X’s point is that __________. X’s observations are shallow in that… • **** be sure to use the variety of active/action verbs I gave to you in reflecting your source’s position and your own. • Also when introducing your source try to qualify your source. • *** be sure not to be redundant – “A quote by Shakespeare says…” should be “Shakespeare says…” it is redundant (like me) and weakens your point.

Avoid playing it “safe” and using boring worn out attributions such as “he says” “she states” “she claims” “he believes”blah blah blah…Use vivid precise signal verbs for attribution of quotes • Asserts • Believes • claims • Emphasizes • Insists • Acknowledges • Extols • Endorses • Observes • Celebrates • Corroborates • Qualifies • Deplores • Questions • Repudiates • Advocates • Exhorts • Implores • Warns • Urges • Pleads • Etc…

How to paraphrase and write a summary • In a paraphrase, you list key points in your own words. • In a summary, you present in your own words the gist of the text. • One way to learn summary is with a partner to read a text, maybe five to six pages long, number the paragraphs and • write one-sentence summaries of each paragraph. • Then transform the summary sentences into a précis.

Wednesday April 23rd JE #10 How does the media’s portrayal of sports affect society…images, consumerism etc. • Objectives: /aka what I’m learning & the take aways 1) assess progress on novel exam project 2) assess daily class work 3) practice writing in timed conditions 4) synthesis of ideas through a piece and analysis of synthesis inwriting and reading • I can appreciate that it is the anniversary of Shakespeare’s birthday and deathday • I can Hand in journals for the novel project • I can hand in my journals and notes for class • I can do my best and practice a Timed writing free response to question 2 from 2009 • I can hand in the Roosevelt hmwk • I can read p.459 – 470 and identify how this piece is related to the other units of Community, education, and gender, with a quotation supporting each connection.

Thursday April 24th JF #1 What makes something a “sport”? • Objectives: /aka what I’m learning & the take aways 1) add to the list of Greek a nd Latin words 2) assess independent work 3) practice voice lesson and applying surface and deeper meanings 4) take notes and apply lessons on effective analysis 5) collaborate and analyze writing and identify standards in rubrics for free responses – writing to the audience • I can record the Root word of the day #2 • I can hand in my independent work from the Textbook from yesterday • I can do the Voice lesson and apply surface and deeper practice to it. • I can understand the notes for effective analysis and apply it to the sports article from Mr. Norton due Monday. • I can evaluate my Free response through analysis of question 2 2009 looking at results and making conclusions about effective writing – in writing group we can do a protocol and then share with the class. • I can remember to do a take away

Analysis: choosing a position • Yes/no/okay but… • First determine what the writer you are reading/listening to is saying • Determine your position – respond to what the author says – agree, disagree, or both? • So identify the authors thesis and supports/arguments • Then your position – straightforward – agree disagree of two minds – relative to the author on his/her topic. • Independent practice: • 1. Bring in a copy of a sports or fitness editorial. • 2. do a close reading of it • 3. Summarize what the author says. • 4.Identify the author’s thesis and supporting arguments. • 5.Introduce your position. • 6. Offer a quotation from the piece and respond to it. • Due Monday

Friday April 25thJF #2 FWF • Objectives: /aka what I’m learning & the take aways 1) practice free response writing in like conditions 2) apply analysis activity on won for article assigned 3) evaluate and identify the standards of effective writing independently • I can do my best writing on Free response #3 from 2011 • I can respond to the editorial on sports and apply the notes and directions given yesterday • I can Read and evaluate 20011 #3 free responses over the weekend and determine a score for each and mine with at least a paragraph explanation for each analysis and score. • I can remember to do a take away
