The Community of Hope exists to proclaim the HOPE of Jesus Christ to the unreached people of Montgomery and the world through multihousing and non traditional church planting. • Mother Church-Hope Community Baptist Church… A Church without Walls…Member of the Montgomery Baptist Association. • Project Hope-In Partnership with Area Churches to take the Gospel to the unreached. • Hope Community Ministries-Respond to the needs of the overlooked and ignored of society and plant churches in their midst. • Hope Network-Build relationships and friendships with like minded Christians across the continent, networking for the purpose of beginning a church planting movement in North America through city church development. www.community-of-hope.org

  3. What does the Unreached Culture Look Like? A Cycle of Hopelessness… Then Jesus made a circuit of all the towns and villages. He taught in their meeting places, reported kingdom news, and healed their diseased bodies, healed their bruised and hurt lives. When he looked out over the crowds, his heart broke. North American Mission Board Multihousing Church Planting NORTH AMERICA MULTIHOUSING FACTS: • More than 30% of North America lives in multihousing. • Apartment dwellers have doubled in the past 20 years in North America. • By the year 2010, more than half of all North Americans will reside in multihousing. • While public housing may remain the residence of last resort, many people choose multifamily dwellings for a variety or reasons, including convenience, lifestyle and community. • Once considered the home of the poor, multihousing communities dot the entire North American social-economic landscape, from low income to $5 million dollar homes. • 60% (120 million people) of the unchurched of America live in multihousing. www.community-of-hope.org

When outreach efforts to assimilate someone from multihousing to the local church were attempted, the success effort reached only 24%. However, when a church is planted on site, the success rate of retention jumps to 70%! www.community-of-hope.org

  12. North American Mission BoardMultihousing Church Planting WHAT DO THOSE WHO LIVE IN THIS CULTURE LOOK LIKE? WHAT ARE THEIR NEEDS? LIFESTYLE .... • Many who live in this community are very nice, relationship oriented, and grateful for your assistance. • Many are in a single parent dwelling, with several children and family members who “stay” there. • Many have an income at poverty or below status, working minimum wage jobs. • Many are either insured by Medicaid or have no insurance. If they have a steady job, more than likely they will not have medical insurance. • Many love their children dearly, and are doing their best to help them succeed in life. www.community-of-hope.org

North American Mission BoardMultihousing Church Planting • Many encounter on a regular basis an environment that produces the vices of life… drugs, alcohol, prostitution, gangs, drive-bys, etc.; many have experienced jail or have a close family member in jail. • Many are either experiencing personally or know of someone close to them that has been killed or wounded violently, or suffering from such horrible diseases such as Aids, Sexually Transmitted Diseases, etc. • Many live in a community where the majority of the youth are either dead or in prison. • Many do not have a vehicle, thus not allowing them to wander far from their community (many have never been to the mall or Wal-Mart in Montgomery). • Many women suffer from the silent sins (i.e. starch, chalk addiction, incest, gang rape, etc.), and several commit acts of prostitution, drug selling, etc. to support addiction, or to survive with needed income. www.community-of-hope.org

  14. North American Mission BoardMultihousing Church Planting • Many drink or do drugs to escape the hopelessness of their community, home, and personal regrets. The heaviest addiction presently seems to be crack • Many are seeking “community,” and will find it with the good or the bad, pending on who gets there first. • Many will say yes to almost anything, but don’t always mean it. Politeness generally dictates priority over being honest. www.community-of-hope.org

  15. North American Mission BoardMultihousing Church Planting WHAT DO THOSE WHO LIVE IN THIS CULTURE LOOK LIKE? WHAT ARE THEIR NEEDS? Theology .... • Many have some understanding of God, and generally a holy respect of Him and His people (more so than the suburbs). • Many, if asked, know the language of Zion, and speak of some distant church attendance, but are unchurched at present. • Many are hungry for a relationship with Jesus, but generally lack the discipline to “stay the course” in the midst of living in the middle of “Sodom.” • Many have an “Armenian” background, thinking they lose their salvation when they sin, thus having many hands raised again for “the sinner’s prayer.” www.community-of-hope.org

North American Mission BoardMultihousing Church Planting • Many have been influenced somewhat by Muslims and Jehovah Witnesses, and some demonstrate the post-modern habit of forming one’s own religion. • Many are sincere about their desire to walk with God, and be transformed by His power. They usually do well with small accountability groups who monitor their commitment to holiness. • Many feel they have inferior clothing to go to a conventional church, and many do not have the means to get there without asking for a ride. • Many are anxious for added events such as literacy, GED, etc. They are genuinely appreciative of your coming to tell them about Jesus, and to help them help their community. www.community-of-hope.org

  17. North American Mission BoardMultihousing Church Planting • Many respond well with the gospel narratives, and with biblical story telling. One does not need to go through all the “pre-talk” to point them to Christ. They prefer you to “cut to the chase.” • Many welcome any kind of “relationship/friendship oriented” meeting (i.e. block party, bible study, sitting under a tree, servant evangelism, etc.) but dislike the “come in, conquer, and leave” mentality that most churches have when dealing with the inner city. www.community-of-hope.org

  18. North American Mission BoardMultihousing Church Planting HOW DO I REACH OUT INTO THE INNER CITY? • BE YOURSELF... • You have been made in the image of God. You have your testimony and your gifts given by Him. People of all cultures appreciate transparency, and a person that is genuine. • BE IDENTIFIABLE... • Don’t go “cloak and dagger” trying to fit in. Identify yourself and your purpose as clear as you can. People of all cultures appreciate honesty. • BE SENSITIVE... • They are dealing with a much harder life than you. Constantly ask yourself, “What would Jesus do?” www.community-of-hope.org

  19. North American Mission BoardMultihousing Church Planting • BE SIMPLE... • Many can’t read or suffer with learning disabilities. Use gospel narratives to share the plan of salvation. Use the “KISS” formula. • BE CONFIDENT... • Don’t go in fear, but with power, love and a sound mind. You don’t need to be consumed with the danger. This robs you of the joy of building friendships. • BE FRIENDLY & RESPECTFUL... • Nobody likes a wise guy in any culture. Don’t dare look down upon them! www.community-of-hope.org

Don’t give “body language” signs of caution, or mistrust. • BE PRAYERFUL… • Unless the Lord saves them, everything you do is in vain. God will use you and your personality. Trust Him! • BE POSITIVE… • Treat them like Jesus would. Hover around John 3:16. Point them to hope, God’s word, and a better day in Christ. • BE HELPFUL… • Look for ways to help, but not to take over. Always see everything as a partnership. Be careful to get their opinion and blessing before starting a project. Meet the need and plant the seed! www.community-of-hope.org

Are they there for us or against us? • Do a history of the City, Community, People Group, etc. • Do a Community Needs Survey… Ask the people in the community you are to serve several questions, such as: • What are the greatest strengths to your community? • What are the greatest weaknesses? • What do you consider as the greatest needs in your community? • How can we best assist you and your family? • What do you think about God? Form a Prayer team to start praying immediately over these issues. • Self & Team Reflection: What kind of theology to I have about missions? • What kind of strategy is the Lord telling me from this probe? • Am I truly seeing these people through the eyes of Jesus? • If not, why? • Is there a firm sense from the Holy Spirit that He is directing me specifically to this place? • Does my team have the “go” light from Jesus? www.community-of-hope.org

North American Mission BoardMultihousing Church Planting • BIBLICAL… • God is a God of Community (Genesis 1:26; 2:18) • Jesus had twelve disciples (in fact, every rabbi had small learning groups). • The early church met in houses (Acts 2:46-47; Acts 20:20;Romans 16:3-5; Colossians 4:15; Philemon 2) The first church building was built in 323 A.D. The church has not seen such dramatic growth as it did in the first three centuries when they began utilizing buildings as the principle place of worship. www.community-of-hope.org

North American Mission BoardMultihousing Church Planting • HISTORICAL … John Wesley, founder of the Methodist church, utilized cell groups as the core of his divine strategy for evangelism and discipleship. It resulted in a major awakening in England during the Industrial Revolution (known as the Wesleyan Revivals). • Follow Up: Wesley would follow through with small groups from larger mass meetings (Whitfield Campaigns). • Field Churches: Led and operated by “lay preachers.” These men were circuit riders, overseeing several areas. • Class Meetings: These small groups were broken down from the field church into groups of twelve. • Accountability Groups: These smaller groups were more serious, and had approximately three people.   47. North American Mission BoardMultihousing Church Planting THE CELL LESSON • A cell lesson is different than the conventional approach of teacher/pupil western learning. It is experiential/ didactic learning, meaning that… • THE HOLY SPIRIT IS THE TEACHER, • THE BIBLE IS THE TEXT (2 Timothy 3:16-17), • AND EVERY PARTICIPANT A LEARNER. • With this small-group approach the group doesn’t build on the teachings of a person but on the Holy Spirit’s power to open the truth to one’s heart. The leader provides direction for the cell church as a whole, but anyone can facilitate the lesson, thus training every cell participant to one day be a future cell leader. All cell lessons are designed with the above approach in mind. www.community-of-hope.org
