  2. A sentence is a group of words beginning with a capital letter and ending with a full stop, exclamation, or question mark in written language, containing a main verb.

  3. A "sentence" is a gathering of words fitting together in a way as to describe a thought.

  4. Sentence Parts

  5. Within a sentence, there are three main parts that make up a sentence: the subject, the verb, and the complement.

  6. Subject The subject is either a noun or pronoun and answers the question "Who?" or  "What?" before the verb.  The subjectperforms action, receives action, or is in a state of being. Example:Ehmczee plays piano.

  7. Verb The verbindicates whether the subject performs action, receives action or is in a state of being. The verbmight include helping words called auxiliaries. Examples: Bee Jay drives the car. (subject performs action) Peex was paid for her computer. (sucject receives action) Ehmczee is in pink of health. (subject is in a state of being)

  8. Note: The verb usually comes after the subject, but in some cases it precedes the subject.  This occurs when a question is asked or when a sentence begins with there or where. Ex: There is a truck of smuggled goods in the street. Ex: Where are my clothes for the party?

  9. Complement Many sentences also contain a complement, which completes the meaning of the sentence and answers the question "What?" or "Whom?" after the verb. Ex:  The typhoon has destroyed the cars . (what?) Ex: The secretary now is MC Sancha. (whom?)

  11. Declarative - A declarative sentence makes a statement. A declarative sentence ends with a period. Example: The house will be built on a hill. Interrogative - An interrogative sentence asks a question. An interrogative sentence ends with a question mark. Example: How did you find the card? Exclamatory - An exclamatory sentence shows strong feeling. An exclamatory sentence ends with an exclamation mark. Example: The monster is attacking! Imperative - An imperative sentence gives a command. Example: Cheryl, try the other door. Sometimes the subject of an imperative sentence (you) is understood. Example: Look in the closet. (You, look in the closet.)
