  4. Where • Explored the world by ocean • Turned attention away from trade in Mediterranean sea • Europe focused on trade with the Americas and on the Atlantic ocean

  5. Why • To get to Asia • Silk road was closed in 1453, needed alternate route • Spices, silk and inventions came from Asia

  6. How • New technology in shipping made long distance sailing possible. • The astrolabe- Arabian invention, Determined Latitude • The magnetic compass- Chinese invention • The caravel – Portuguese invention, New ship that could sail into dangerous Atlantic Ocean.
