  2. Introduction • In this lesson, we are going to… • Review the skills in doing the summary cloze exercise in Section C • Try to do some exercises in the lesson

  3. Reminders • Format: • A passage in 2 different versions: Version 1 (V1)+ Version 2 (V2) • V1: Original version • V2: Rewritten version • Task: To fill in the blanks in V2 with the help from V1 • 1 blank for 1 word (Pay attention to the length of the blank)

  4. Reminders • Order of paragraphs in V1 ≠ Order of paragraphs in V2 • Clue: The keywords in the topic sentences • No marks for grammatically wrong answers • Hyphenated words (e.g. full-scale) = 1 word

  5. Reminders • Types of answers: • Direct copying • Direct copying with changes in: • Tenses (e.g. go – went) • Plural form (e.g. child – children) • Parts of speech [e.g. develop (v.) – development (n.)] • New words • Synonyms (e.g. fast – quickly) • Antonyms (e.g. fast – slow)

Steps • Locate keywords in the topic sentences (the first two sentences) in each paragraph of V2 • Example: • V2: “They mention _______ and ______ ______ as being their main concern.” • Keywords: • “main concern” • Match the keywords with those in V1 • V1: “Some restaurant owners are worried about food safety and transportation.” • Keywords: • “worried about” • Answers: “They mention transportation and foodsafety as being their main concern.”

  7. Steps • Mark the paragraph number of V1 next to the paragraph in V2 • Long paragraphs in V2 = 2 – 3 paragraphs in V1 • Find the keywords in the middle of the paragraphs in V2 (a sentence with no blanks)

Steps • Look for the cue words around the blanks (may not look the same as they are in V1) • Example: • V1: “A tree trunk has been hollowed out and filled with drugs.” • V2: “The man used a hollowed-out _____ _____ to hide drugs.” • Answer: tree trunk • Make the answers grammatically correct • Example: • V1: “a really good tune” • V2: “fewgood ____” • Answer: tunes (plural form)

  9. Other Possible Forms of Answers • Synonyms / Transformed words • V1: “That talented man became famous at the age of 41.” • V2: “That talented man has become a household name in his early _____.” • Answer: forties / 40s

  10. Other Possible Forms of Answers • Shortening phrases • V1: “Some chefs would keep the food left over and re-cook it for animals.” • V2: “Any leftovers usually became _____ _____.” • Answer: animal food

  11. Other Possible Forms of Answers • Hyponyms • Collective nouns (names for a group of people / things) • Examples: • China, Canada, Australia • Countries • Butterflies, Bees, Ants • Insects • V1: “Ice-cream and cakes don’t interesttoday’s ladies any more.” • V2: “What many womendon’t care for these days are _______.” • Answer: Snacks / Desserts / Sweets
