Anointing of the Sick • Why is this a sacrament? • What has bodily mending to do with salvation? • Shouldn’t the Church focus on spiritual health? • If someone truly believed that a healing ritual that invoked God would bring them physical healing, why even bother looking to doctors and medicine? Shouldn’t House be responsible for healing you when your sick, and not your priest?

  4. Relationship between Theology and Health • Division between science and Religion is a recent one • Empirical Reason and Faith not opposed to each other • Physical ailments not divorced form spiritual

  5. Sickness in Judaism • God created the world and affirmed its goodness • God’s vision of creation did not include suffering • State of existence without physical and psychological suffering • Original Sin obstructs God’s vision

  6. Genesis 3:19 • “By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread until you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”

Book of Leviticus • Leviticus 11 – unclean animals • Leviticus 12 – purification of women after birth and their period • Leviticus 13 – purification of someone showing symptoms of illness • Leviticus 14 – purification of someone who has an illness • Leviticus 15 – purity laws concerning the discharge of bodily fluids

  8. Why so Many Purity Laws • Physical and spiritual purity interconnected for the Jews

  9. Public Ministry of Jesus • Matthew 9:1-8 • Physical and spiritual healing interconnected • Although physical illness caused by sin, it is not necessarily connected to individual sin • Ie. Sickness is not a sign that someone is evil • Jesus shows compassion for those who suffer

  10. Acts of the Apostles • Connection to Jesus’ actions • Care and heal the sick • Appeal for God’s grace • Grace either heals, or gives strength to, the afflicted

  11. The Ritual Today • Accept modern medicine • Do not divorce the ongoing need for spiritual healing • Ritual consists of prayer, laying of the hands, anointing with oil • Administered by a priest or bishop

  12. Who can Receive Sacrament • Baptized • Seriously ill • Before surgery • Elderly • One one’s death bed

  13. Last Rite • Forgive Sins • Empower and strengthen individual who faces death
