PRESS aims to… • Learn what development partners are doing in the statistical field and identify countries or areas of statistics in need of more support. • Offer this information to financial and technical partners responsible for providing aid and to countries receiving it. • Raise the profile of statistics within the overall context of aid to developing countries.

  5. KEY FINDINGS OF PRESS 2009

  6. Key Findings of PRESS 2009 Coverage 2009 PRESS round provides information over the period 2007-09 (2006-2009 for 2008 round) It reflects the activities of 60 donors in 113 recipient countries as well as regional and global projects to multiple countries. (45 respondents in previous round)

  7. Key Findings of PRESS 2009 Financial commitments to ongoing statistical development projects during the period 2007-09 amounted to roughly USD 1.4 billion. (1 billion for 2006-08)

  8. Key Findings of PRESS 2009 Estimated disbursements during 2007-09: roughly USD 785 million (USD 550 million reported for 2006-08 – increased by 42%) Africa received well over half of total statistical support both in terms of commitments and disbursements.

Key Findings of PRESS 2009 Thirteen countries* had estimated disbursements exceeding USD 10 million, equivalent to nearly 40% of total estimated disbursements and 55% of total country-specific disbursements. Disbursements to these countries mounted to less than 0.1% of their GDP * Afghanistan, Albania, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Mali, Mozambique, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sudan, Tanzania, and Ukraine

  10. PRESS 2009 Results: Pacific Financial commitments to statistical development in the Pacific: roughly US$ 8 million for the period 2007–09. The largest donor to Pacific island countries and territories was Australia. Aid from the top three donors combined to total 77% of all commitments in the Pacific.

  11. PRESS 2009 Results: Pacific • Excluding “unallocated” support … Fiji, Vanuatu, and PNG combined represent 77% of the regional total. Only 10 of the SPC member states were reported as having received country-specific aid. However, “unallocated” funds targeting the entire region accounted for 60% of the regional total.

  12. PRESS conclusions Financial support to statistics is relatively small. Statistical support is still concentrated in few countries but trend is becoming less concentrated. Main focus of support is on institutional development and large activities (population/agricultural censuses and household surveys). Partner collaboration in statistical development needs to be strengthened – Collaboration at country level could serve as examples
